Manchester Pest Control - Identify Foxes
Often Copied, never matched! The Fox (Vulpes vulpes):
What are they?
The scientific name of red foxes or foxes, as they are commonly known, is Vulpes vulpes. Foxes are a member of the dog family, the Canidae and for this reason they are known as canids.
Wolves, coyotes, arctic foxes and the domestic dog are also canids. The canids are carnivores (meat eaters) but their diet is generalised and opportunistic, adapting to whatever foods are available locally. This is why foxes are so abundant and widely distributed, and historically why the wolf was so widespread across the northern hemisphere, in habitats ranging from deserts to the arctic.
The red fox is native to the British Isles, and widespread throughout mainland Britain.Foxes moved into urban areas after the First World War due to a change in people’s lifestyles. The new transport systems allowed people to work in one place and to live in another, leading to the building of suburban housing in once rural areas.
Rural foxes quickly urbanised, taking advantage of the food and shelter provided in the relatively large gardens, from compost heaps, bird-tables and garden buildings. Foxes are now accustomed to living near to people and successive generations have spread inwards towards the city centre. There are now more opportunities of food and shelter for foxes in towns and cities than in the surrounding countryside. Although foxes are predominantly nocturnal, it is not unusual to see urban foxes out during the day.
How do they live?
In the wild, not long: mortality rates generally vary between 50% and 70% per annum. At 50% per annum, only a quarter of foxes live to be two years old, 12% to three years, 6% to four years, and very few make it beyond six years. Exceptionally, a wild fox may survive for ten years but by then it will be very arthritic and lost most of its teeth, so that only a few yellowed stumps remain. In captivity, foxes may live up to fourteen years.
