Information about Manchester Wasp Nest Removal

Here at Manchester Pest Control, we get a lot of wasp related call-outs in the spring and summer months. Wasps become an increasing problem in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire as the weather gets warmer and their numbers increase. Wasp queens will usually start to build their nests in the early spring, and they often go unnoticed when the nest is small to begin with and the first worker wasps are just hatching out.

However, by the height of the summer, a nest will have grown to accommodate potentially thousands of wasps. At the same time, the insects that wasps typically feed on will have started to run low in numbers. This is why wasps start to target other food sources and can be a problem for people wanting to enjoy the nice weather outdoors with picnics and barbeques.

Pest Control Manchester will be always be on-hand to address the wasp disposal needs of customers throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. And if it’s advice you need before you decide whether to place that call to us, please check out this handy guide:

Wasp nest identification

If you notice a lot of wasp activity outside your property and want to find out where the nest is, keep an eye on where the wasps are going. You will find that there is a steady stream of them going to and from the nest.

A wasp nest outdoors is likely to be roughly sphere-shaped and off-white in colour. To begin with, it might not be much bigger than an apple, but after a few months, it could be the size of a fairly big watermelon. You might think they would be fairly easy to spot, but sometimes they can be easily overlooked unless you are actually looking for one or stumble upon it by mistake. Outdoor nests can be found in trees, old stone walls, compost heaps or even underground in tunnels pre-excavated by burrowing animals.

Wasps may also build their nests on the sheltered side of your property, tucked up under a convenient overhang. Or they might go one step further if they can gain access through cracks in exterior walls and roof space of buildings such as houses, sheds and garages. Ultimately, they want to find somewhere that the nest cannot be easily disturbed, so if you start to find wasps in your house and don’t use your attic very often, it’s possible this is where they are originating from – so be very wary of sticking your head straight up into the loft space!

DIY vs Professional pest control methods

Many homeowners turn to DIY methods as their first answer to the problem, as store insecticides are often marketed as being the most cost-effective, guaranteed solution even if they often don’t turn out to be. You will have to put yourself at significant risk by getting up close enough to the nest to apply the solution, which can be dangerous for a number of reasons:

1) wasps will attack in force if they think their nest is under threat, which means you WILL get stung;
2) if you or anyone close by has the condition known as anaphylaxis, a single wasp sting can be fatal;
3) even if you don’t get anaphylactic shock, enough stings can leave you very unwell or needing hospital treatment;
4) if you’re balancing on a roof or ladder to reach the nest, you could fall off while you’re warding off the attacking wasps;
5) and after all that, the insecticide might not work anyway as some wasp colonies may carry immunity!

A lot of DIY solutions don’t tend to make a big thing of this on their packaging! That’s probably because it might make people think twice about putting themselves at needless risk. For a very reasonable fee, Wasp Control Manchester can do the job for you with chemicals we know will work because we use them almost daily, and our technicians can get up close to the nest without being stung because they have protective clothing that isn’t available in most high street clothes stores.

Treating a wasp nest
Manchester’s wasp treatment technicians currently use an environmentally friendly dust-based insecticide which they pump inside the wasp nest and which is easily circulated by wasps that come into contact with it. Within a quarter of an hour of touching the dust, the wasps will die. It’s best to then wait at least 24 hours before assuming that the population of the nest has fully expired, as there may be wasps who were roaming further afield when the dust was applied. When they return, they will also be exposed to it and die.

Once a wasp nest has been vacated either because the population has died naturally at the end of the season, or because the nest was treated, no other wasps will make the nest their own in future seasons. Queen wasps always start a new nest from scratch, although they may build quite close to an old, empty nest. It’s your call whether you choose to remove and throw away a nest after it has been emptied in this way, but do bear in mind that the dust will continue to remain potent for as much as three years, and could therefore help to wipe out or prevent other problem nests if an exploring worker or queen can’t resist sticking its head inside.

A note about honey bees

Honey bees are not by their nature as much of a pest as wasps, and in fact their numbers have dwindled in the UK in recent years, so efforts are afoot to try and protect them wherever possible. A professional beekeeper will have the tools at their disposal to extract honey bees that are in a problem location, and relocate them to a safer place. Sometimes, when the nest is located somewhere that it just isn’t possible or practical to remove the bees, it may be necessary as a final course of action to destroy the colony, but strict measures need to be adhered to, ensuring that honey bees from other colonies do not get exposed to insecticides and then wipe out non-problem colonies elsewhere.

If you believe you have a problem with wasps, bees, or hornets, either at the early or advanced stages of their nests’ development, give Manchester Pest Control a call and one of our trained technicians will soon pay you a visit to inspect the nest and determine the best solution.
