The Common Rat or Sewer Rat
This type of rat is most likely the type found close to housing, and they are brown in colour (with grey or lighter fur on its tummy). The head and body portion will be longer than the tail itself, measuring some 14 to 19” overall from tip of nose to tip of tail, so their size alone can be quite frightening.
Their ability to move and even swim is also impressive and a sheer vertical wall can be climbed, as long as the surface has minimal texture for grip. Rat eyesight isn’t the strongest, but their whiskers are so well developed they can find their way around using touch, even in complete darkness. They also have highly tuned sense of hearing and smell.
House Mice
Mice tend to be much smaller, and grey in colour, with lighter colour fur along the tummy. The grey tone does vary so some can look brownish-grey so it is easy to think you might be looking at a young rat. However an adult mouse has small head and small feet for the size of its body whereas a young rat appears to have a very large head and big feet in proportion to its body. Mice also tend to have tail as long as the body, with the biggest mice measuring just under 8 inches overall.
A female mouse in the right conditions will give birth every 6 weeks, so mice must be dealt with promptly at the first suggestion of them, or they can become a huge problem spiralling out of control. You can recognise a mouse infestation by looking for two signs:
Mouse droppings – small black spindle shaped “rice grains” around 5mm in length. These can be found anywhere in a property but there will be lots as mice have no control over toileting and can leave up to 120 droppings in one day if they have an ample diet. Mouse droppings can look a little like bat droppings, especially in loft spaces. Our technicians will be able to clarify which is present.
Damage to property – mice have sharp teeth and they “clean” them regularly by gnawing. Teeth marks can often be seen in floor boards, skirting boards, joists or even in plaster board where pipes may go through cavity walls or up into the loft.
