The Food Standards Agency, in partnership with local authorities in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire, is introducing the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. The schemes help consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving them information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, cafés, takeaways, hotels and food shops.

The schemes also encourage businesses to improve hygiene standards. The overarching aim is to reduce the incidence of food borne illness.

What is ‘Scores on the Doors’?

It is a 5-star rating scheme providing user-friendly information about the standards of hygiene and compliance with the law in food premises in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.

The FHRS involves a 0 – 5 rating scale, with 0 meaning ‘urgent improvement necessary’ and 5 meaning ‘very good’. The current Scores on the Doors scheme operates on a similar basis, awarding 0 – 5 stars.

Why is this good for my business?

Under the Food Safety Act 1990 Local Authorities have a duty to inspect food businesses and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 gives the public the right to access this information. From June 2007 customers will be able to find out the star rating of premises in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. The premises that are hygienic and produce safe food will have more stars. This will benefit the business in that it should attract more customers. Businesses with poor food hygiene practices and not keeping their premises clean and in good repair will have fewer stars.

Who will it apply to?

Initially the scheme will apply to all catering premises and retailers handling or preparing open high-risk food. For example, restaurants, takeaways, sandwich shops, staff canteens, butchers, delicatessens and cafes.
