Treatment Details on Common Pests

As an overview, we provide some basic information on common pests, showing you how we operate with the best services on the market:

3 step rat and mouse pest control

  • On our first visit we make a full risk assessment of the premises to know precisely where the rats and mice are gaining entry to the property.
  • Comprehensive treatment is then applied to the property to efficiently eliminate the infestation
  • This is followed by a full pest-proofing of the premises to prevent further infestation (Which will incur  a extra cost)

4 step cockroach pest control

  • We initially undertake a full risk assessment and survey of the property to assess what factors are contributing to the cockroach infestation, locating their source and noting their species.
  • For large infestations we may use a spray treatment initially to reduce the population
  • The long term solution uses insecticide gel baits which the cockroaches eat, killing off the entire colony over time.
  • Finally, we lay glue traps to capture cockroaches, which help us monitor the efficacy of the long term treatment.

3 step moth pest control

  • Our first step applies a residual based insecticide on all carpets and soft furnishings which kill the moths on contact.
  • Fumigation treatment is the applied to the affected areas, which draw out the moths from their shelters within the property, and ultimately kills them.
  • Going forward, we advise clients not to vacuum or clean the carpets and furnishing affected for the following two weeks, ensuring that the insecticide remains in place to kill remaining moths and moth larvae.

4 step ant pest control

  • We begin with a complete risk assessment and survey of the property, determining the source of ant infestation and the contributing factors.
  • A residual based insecticide spray to treat all the affected areas internally and externally is applied. Common areas include patio gardens and window frames – this will kill all ants on contact.
  • Going forward we encourage clients not to clean the surfaces with treatment, so that the insecticide is more effective, killing any further ants that come into contact with it.
  • Remaining ants are killed by the ant control baits we use, with pharoe ants bringing the poison back to their nests.

5 step bed bugs pest control

  • A visual survey of the property is needed first to see the level of the infestation and how widely it has spread across the property.
  • Clients are then informed and advised on the needed preparation to take.
  • All affected areas are applied with a residual based insecticide spray. The spray kills bed bugs on contact, and prevents the growth of their eggs.
  • We advise refraining from housework, not cleaning the carpets and furnishings for the following two weeks, allowing the insecticide to kill further bed bugs.
  • The same treatment is repeated after two weeks.

Information about bed bugs
Problems with bed bugs Manchester Stockport and Cheshire
Bed bugs are unpleasant little insects that emerge from their hiding places at night and feast on the blood of people who are sleeping. They do not usually live in beds and bedding, and are more likely to make their homes in cracks, joints and gaps in bed frames, skirting boards and other furniture around the home. A bed bug infestation can quickly spread to every room throughout a house, and to neighbouring rooms or apartments in hotels and blocks of flats in the Manchester area. Bed bugs are not a sign of a dirty home or business, but they can ruin reputations and cause a lot of upset if they are left unchecked and allowed to become an infestation.
Bed bugs do not fly or jump, but they can crawl very fast and cover a lot of ground in the process. They tend to travel between properties in Manchester and nationwide by hitching a lift inside travellers’ luggage, second-hand furniture or clothing. Once inside a property, they will hide in gaps and cracks in furniture, bedframes, and around the edges of rooms in carpets and under skirting boards. They are more active at night, so you may be more likely to see them with the aid of a torch when the room is in darkness.
Knowing when you have bed bugs
Bed bugs are small (adults reach approximately half a centimetre in length) but can be seen by the naked eye and look a little like lentils: oval, and ranging in colour from dark yellow to brown. A female bed bug may lay as many as 300 eggs during her lifetime; these eggs are tiny, white and not at all easy to see. The eggs usually hatch within ten days, with newly hatched bed bugs taking up to 8 weeks to reach adulthood. During this time, they will shed layers of skin as they grow, so you might find mottled brownish shells amongst your sheets. Juvenile bed bugs will need blood to help them grow, but an adult may be able to survive a whole year without a blood meal.
Unlike mosquitoes, which bite more at random, bed bugs tend to leave a series of bites in a straight line. Some people may not notice that they have been bitten, while others may develop a reaction, with inflamed and itchy skin around the bite area which may cause discomfort for a number of days. Often, bed bug bites occur on the neck, face, arms and hands. Although a bite from a bed bug will not transmit disease, it can nonetheless be a great source of stress and upset for anyone who is being continually bitten during their sleep. You should avoid scratching bed bug bites as this could cause the bites to become infected, and Manchester Pest Control recommend that you see your GP if you are in a lot of discomfort, so that they can prescribe an appropriate ointment to soothe affected areas.
Other signs of bed bug activity include black spots (faeces) on bedding, as well as small bloodspots which may appear on bedsheets as a result of squashing a bed bug in your sleep after it has had a blood feast. If an infestation occurs, which will happen when bed bugs are not dealt with soon enough, rooms may begin to smell slightly musty due to a scent present in the glands of mature bed bugs.
How can I get rid of bed bugs?
There are steps you can take to deal with the immediate problem, such as giving your property a series of thorough vacuums, being sure to seal the bag and remove it from your property each time so that the bed bugs can’t get out and back into your home. Clothes and bed linen which you believe to be infested can be cleansed of bed bugs by washing them at a temperature of 60C, although you may decide to throw out certain items including mattresses and old furniture if they are heavily infested.
Although it may be possible to treat a bed bug problem with DIY products, they are often ineffective due to the difficulty of identifying and treating all locations where bed bugs may be hiding. Some products only deal with adult bed bugs but don’t eliminate their eggs, particularly if they are in hard-to-reach places. Bed bugs have also been known to develop immunity to shop-bought insecticides, which are not as effective as the industry-available insecticides used by the experienced technicians at Manchester Pet Control.
If you contact Manchester Pest Control on 0161 448 1782, we can send a technician around soon after your call, usually within 24 hours. Our technician will thoroughly inspect your property to identify locations where bed bugs are active, and will then determine the most appropriate action to eliminate them. We have a range of tools at our disposal, including steamers, rapid freeze equipment, and insecticides that we know will do the job whilst being safe for people and the environment. So don’t let the bed bugs bite – call Manchester Pest Control today!

How do I get rid of fleas?
If this question brought you to our site, don’t despair. You’ll be pleased to know that Manchester Pest Control have all the answers to help you understand what you’re up against and how to remove these nasty little parasites from your home. Half of the battle is understanding the enemy, and with us on your side, homes around Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire can be free of fleas so that you, your family and pets can once again sleep soundly at night.
Facts about fleas
The adult flea is barely a quarter of a centimetre long, and red-brown in colour, so it is no surprise that they are very difficult to spot, particularly when they are concealed in gaps and cracks around your property. They lack wings, but can jump a long way and will try to attach themselves to people or animals in the vicinity so that they can take in a blood meal. Fleas reaching adulthood are only able to reproduce after they have fed on a host’s blood. Under the right conditions, a female flea may live for as long as 18 months, and lay in the region of 5000 eggs during her lifetime!
Flea eggs are tiny and may go unobserved unless clustered in large numbers – often though, they are tucked away in hard-to-reach places, or scattered throughout the home if laid on a human or animal host; the eggs do not attach themselves to the host, and will fall off as the host moves about, unknowingly helping to distribute the eggs all over the house. Flea larvae may hatch from their eggs within days, and will typically feed on organic material such as dead insects, but they will also eat the faeces of adult fleas as it often contains traces of blood.
The flea larvae then enter the next stage of the flea’s life cycle, spinning a cocoon, in which they remain as ‘pupae’ until they are woken by the vibrations of a passing host. Pupae may remain inside their cocoons for several months if a house is empty during that time, but will emerge as adult fleas as soon as they sense that a potential host is nearby. Therefore, it is generally the case that if you encounter fleas in your property, the number of active adults is only a small proportion of the population, with many still at the egg, larvae or pupae phases of development.
Fleas in Manchester’s homes
Fleas are not a sign of an untidy home – it can just be bad luck if you happen to have them in yours. Often, they may have entered the property on a household pet, or on an unwelcome intruder such as a mouse. Second-hand rugs and sofas may also be a method of entry, so be cautious if you think you’ve spotted a bargain – it may come with extra company attached! Remember that although there are many different types of fleas, and they prefer different types of host, they are not fussy as long as there is a ready blood supply available.
You are likely to notice you have a flea problem if your pets become agitated, scratching and grooming themselves repeatedly, or if you are bitten yourself. Flea bites can become inflamed and itchy, and scratching them may cause the bite mark to become infected. Some fleas are capable of transmitting diseases including typhus, tungiasis and bartonellosis, while small children may be exposed to the risk of flea tapeworm if they accidentally consume an infected flea or its faeces during play.
It is also possible to identify the presence of fleas by their faeces, which is coarse and black, and may be found in pets’ bedding and other surfaces such as carpets, rugs and furniture on which a cat or dog may also rest around the home. You may also find their faeces in your own bedding, or your sheets speckled with blood where they have feasted on you during your sleep. At Manchester Pest Control, we appreciate this can be very distressing to Cheshire’s homeowners – bathing your pets and vacuuming your home only addresses the immediate problem.
Get rid of fleas for good!
For fast-acting solutions, contact Manchester Pest Control on 0161 448 1782 and benefit from our expert knowledge. We’re discrete and use unmarked vans so that our customers needn’t worry about what their neighbours might think. Our trained technician will carry out a thorough inspection of your property to determine the extent of the infestation and likely places where fleas and their eggs are concealed. We are familiar with many types of household pests, and can address wider issues for you if it turns out the fleas are a result of mouse or other rodent activity.
The important thing is that Manchester Pest Control can deal with your main flea problem head-on. Throughout the process, we’ll use chemicals that are safe for your family and the environment but which will eliminate the fleas at all stages of their development, in a way that DIY products rarely address to customers’ satisfaction. We’ll also conduct follow-up visits to make sure that the treatment has been fully effective. It is of course important that you carry out certain measures yourself around the time of the treatment and afterwards, as outlined below…
We advise that bedding (yours and your pet’s) is washed at high temperatures and furniture that may contain fleas is treated, while carpets and rugs are vacuumed thoroughly and repeatedly, with vacuum bags sealed and disposed of in bins outside so that fleas do not immediately escape back into your home. We recommend that you seek advice from a local vet about products that you can apply to your pets to keep fleas at bay. And be sure to seal up any holes or cracks through which mice might enter your home carrying more unwanted guests.
Together, we can rid your home of fleas, quickly and without costs spiralling out of control. We’re effective, we’re good value, and we’re local – we’re Manchester Pest Control.

Manchester’s bed bugs: The facts

In Manchester and other large UK cities, there has been an annual growth in the number of infestations by bed bugs. These small blood-sucking insects are not always easy to detect and eliminate, and they have been known to hitch a lift in luggage, clothing and furniture, so even the cleanest home or hotel may suddenly find itself infested by these unwelcome visitors.

Identifying bed bugs Manchester Pest Control Services

Bed bugs are not easy to see, because they are small and prefer to come out at night when many of Manchester’s residents are sleeping. They are flat and come in varying shades of brown, with adults growing to just over half a centimetre in length and a little less than that in width. The female lays up to five hundred tiny white eggs during her lifetime, and it takes only a couple of months for new-born bed bugs to reach fertile adulthood.

Bed bugs feed off the blood of people and their pets. Emerging from their hiding places at night, they can cover a lot of ground for such small creatures. You can recognise a bed bug bite as they usually leave a series of bites in a line, as opposed to a flea, which will bite more randomly. Some people are very sensitive to these bites and may experience swelling and itchiness, while others may not react at all. Another indication of bed bugs in the vicinity may be dark blood spots on bedding or mattresses – these spots are bed bug faeces, containing the blood of their prey.

Although they are known as ‘bed bugs’, these insects do not just live inside mattresses, headboards and bedframes, and can also be found in other furniture items, as well as in carpets and gaps in skirting boards. They do not just remain in the bedroom, and can quickly infest a property. In Manchester’s hotels and apartment blocks, they may spread out into the corridor and neighbouring rooms in little time at all, resulting in a huge infestation throughout the entire building.

How to deal with bed bugs

Due to their size and the many nooks and crannies they might hide themselves away in, it can be a challenge to identify bed bugs’ hiding places and then properly deal with them. A thorough vacuum of all rooms and furniture may help to get rid of bed bugs and eggs they have laid, although it is essential that the vacuum bag is thrown out immediately afterwards to prevent them escaping into your property once more.

Also, however hard you might try, even with repeated vacuuming over a period of time, you may find that you still overlook or cannot reach certain locations where bedbugs are hiding away. One somewhat extreme, but sometimes effective measure, is to varnish all wood surfaces including floorboards, furniture and doors, although this still cannot be guaranteed 100% effective due to the many places where bed bugs might be hiding.

Shop-bought DIY bed bug sprays and powders may eliminate some bed bugs but are, again, unlikely to eliminate all of them, as these insecticides are usually only effective against bed bugs but not their eggs. Furthermore, bed bugs can quickly develop an immunity to certain chemicals, which means that the chemicals may be more dangerous to people than the bed bugs themselves!

Manchester Pest Control – Number 1 for bed bug solutions

As you’ve seen above, bed bugs are highly resilient pests and very difficult to get rid of using traditional or DIY methods. The cost and time commitment of trying to deal with them yourself can gradually mount up, and it can also be emotionally draining when you think you are rid of them and then you start getting bitten all over again.

At Manchester Pest Control, we have dealt with many bed bug infestations over the years, which makes us highly experienced in how to identify their hiding places, and the approach we take in dealing with them. Our trained technicians are on hand 24/7 and will carry out a thorough assessment of your property, with discretion assured for your own peace of mind.
