Bee nests and control:
While there are numerous bee species in the UK, the most common three types that you will encounter are the Honey, Bumble and Mason bee. Bees are not aggressive species and should be left alone as they are beneficial to nature and their population numbers are already falling. They are naturally quite docile and will not sting unless provoked. By the time you take notice of the nest it will normally already be near its natural end towards the middle of summer. Because of their important role in the pollination of flowers and other plants, their ability to produce honey, and their falling numbers, bees are not considered as a pest as such and therefore extermination is very much a last resort.

Bees are similar in appearance to wasps, though are usually fatter, less streamlined and hairier around the legs and abdomen. Bumble bees are easily identified due to their size and the distinctive deep hum of their wings while in flight, but Honey and Mason bees can be very similar in appearance. However the Mason bee is more solitary and will carry pollen on its underbelly rather than on its legs.

Nest information and risks:
The type of bee that you will normally see outside of the nest or hive is the “worker” bee, who are responsible for every job in the hive other than breeding. They are not naturally aggressive and will only sting if threatened, therefore it is very easy to avoid them. You will only see large numbers of bees in a swarm during the breeding season, usually between 14th April and 14th May, when queens attract large numbers of workers and breeding males to her. These swarms will usually only last for a few hours and can often be found on trees, the sides of houses or other buildings, or other structures. The swarming will end with the new Queen leaving to establish a new hive and taking half of the existing colony with her.

Bees are of course normally associated with hives, though they can also nest in root systems, cracks in masonry and behind loose stonework or cavity walls. If you think your property may hold a nest or hive, the easiest way to tell is to tack the movements of a worker bee as they return to their nesting site.

The sting of a bee can be very painful, however as mentioned above they will only sting if they feel threatened or in defence of their hive and queen. Stings are fatal for the bee that delivers it and it will only be used as a last resort. It is important to note that some people are allergic to bee stings and can go into anaphylactic shock if stung. It’s therefore important to contact the ambulance service as soon as possible if they are stung and to remove them from the area to prevent further stings.

To reduce the risk of a bee sting we would recommend taking the following steps:
• Avoid wearing perfumes and bright coloured clothing.
• Remove or cover all food sources.
• Keep yourself & others a safe distance from any nest.
• Close windows, doors or ventilation points.
• Do not attempt to swat the bee as they will normally only attack if they feel threatened.
• Keep still and allow the bee to fly around you. Once it realises that you are not a flower it will move on.
• If someone is stung take initial first aid steps and consult their GP or NHS Direct.

Control methods and nest removal services:
Even though they are not protected by law, wild bees are in danger of extinction and we therefore recommend that they are left alone as they do not cause any significant issues or risks like other insects can. If the bees pause an unacceptable health and safety risk to the public then we would recommend relocation rather than extermination as a control method. At Manchester Pest Control we have years of experience in relocating bee hives without any risk and will be more than happy to assess your bee problem.

Bee keepers are also more than happy to come to remove a nest and relocate it at no charge, or for a similar fee to what a pest control company would charge to exterminate the nest. We would recommend checking the link below for contact details for a local bee expert.

http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/find_a_swarm_coordinator.php

Please note that there is currently a shortage of feral honey bee colonies (wild bees), however bee keepers can easily and economically purchase honey bee lines from firms that raise them artificially. As such, it is not always worth the effort for bee keepers to remove a wild nest. It is also important to remember that Honey bees are protected by regulation and their nests need to be relocated. Do not attempt to remove a bee nest without professional or your local authority’s advice.

For further information about honey bees, we would recommend contacting The British Beekeepers Association: http://www.bbka.org.uk/

If the bee nest is inaccessible or difficult to remove, and the location poses an immediate risk to the public or vulnerable people, then extermination can be considered as a last resort. Our technicians would use a fast acting powder or spray treatment to kill off the bee population within a few days. If this treatment is required, all entrance points to the treated nest will have to be blocked at the same time. This is to prevent non-target bees from entering the area and coming into contact with the treatment. This can cause significant disruption and additional costs if for example, the nest is high up inside a chimney or a cavity wall.

Please note that if Honey bees are the target, they may have produced a honeycomb within your property. This will be relocated with the nest if a non-lethal treatment method is chosen, however if extermination is required then the comb will need to be removed as well as it will rot if left in place. This can cause additional problems and attract further pests.

Action we will take:
At Manchester Pest Control, all of our highly skilled technicians are fully BPCA certified. On arrival, our technician will:
• Establish the location of the bee’s nest/s.
• Determine the most appropriate method for access, removal or treatment.
• Brief the customer on their findings and recommended next steps.
• Ensure the safety of others.
• Wear their protective equipment and commence with the bees nest removal or treatment process.
• Ensure the area is left safe and provide a written report.

If you experience any further bee issues following the completion of our treatment, please do not hesitate to contact us and a technician will be sent to complete a follow-up treatment, free of charge.

WASP FAQ: Read our Frequently Asked Questions below for further information
I saw a Wasp, does that mean I have a nest?
An occasional wasp flying away from your house or garden is likely to indicate your area has become the hunting ground for food or materials, rather than a building plot for a nest. Regularly seeing multiple wasps active nearby implies there is live nest near the location. Observing from a safe distance and noting where they are flying to will provide the location of the nest. Once wasps have gathered wood from trees, fences or waste, for building the nest or food in the forms of tiny bugs from shrubs and flowers, they will always return these items straight to the nest.
I’m not sure what a wasp nest looks like.
A nest can be built in a wide range of places even underground! While many have a cardboard/papery like appearance, the best indication is watching (safely) wasps repeatedly flying in and out of a small hole. This means there is a nest in that location. Once the nest position has been identified, please stay well away from the area and make call Manchester Pest Control as soon as you can.
Do I have to kill it? Will they just die anyway?
Wasps do die off at the end of the summer period. When the Queen stops reproducing, the wasps no longer need to endlessly hunt for food and building materials and having served their purpose in life, they naturally expire. However, a nest can contain up to 10 thousand insects, all with a strong instinct to protect their home and serve their Queen. With increasing numbers of people being fatally allergic to wasp stings, it’s best not to leave a nest active, in an area frequented by humans. Children and Pets with their inquisitive nature, despite warnings are likely to disturb nature in action, and stings can still cause a great deal of pain and discomfort to those who aren’t allergic. Many people are not aware they have such an allergy until it’s too late, and you are unlikely to know whether neighbours, visitors or visiting workmen for example, are affected by anaphylaxis.
Why do stings happen late in the year if they are dying?
A wasp, like humans, are not necessarily cognitively sharp towards the end of their life span! Towards Autumn when they are no longer needed to serve the Queen, they will head towards heat and light in a dazed state. This often leads them indoors. We have responded to many customers who have been stung while sleeping at night at the end of the season.
The Nest is still there – surely the wasps will come back next year?
Wasp nests never become active again or have a new set of wasps “move in” once it has been treated. They will always build a new fresh nest each season. When a nest has been completely removed after treatment, the wasps who were out working at the time of removal will come back and continue building in the exact same spot! After all they identified it as a prime location in the first instance. It may appear wasps are using an old nest again but they will be building a new one nearby, not using the same nest. Our years of experience at Manchester Pest Control has proven year after year leaving a treated nest in situ is the most effective way of dealing with wasps. Remember our service is guaranteed so if intimal treatment is unsuccessful we will revisit free of charge and make your home a wasp free zone!

 Hi
Just wanted to say what an excellent, courteous + well spoken chap this Paul Barker is! He came to set some mice traps and explained everything clearly. I am also very impressed at how many traps were set (compared to Man City Councils 3). He worked quickly and efficiently and I am sure you already know what an asset to your company this young chap is. Customers are always quick to complain but we never praise the ones who work hard.
He took a cheque payment and had made a further weekend appointment (which I really needed because I am a teacher!) for a second visit. So thanks once again – hopefully this will be the last of the little pesks!(Saxelby Drive, Manchester)

Thanks for your feedback!
There is a problem. Please try again.

How to Treat A Wasps Nest , Pest Control  Manchester Stockport Cheshire .

If you can get rid of the nest early on in the spring, you can really help to avoid a serious problem in the late summer months.

The good news is that the same nest will never reused again by a new queen the following year.

A new nest may be built near the previous location though, if it continues to offer good shelter, protection and easy access to the outside  from workers when the nest starts to become established over the first 4 weeks.

Wasp nest treatment Manchester Stockport Cheshire is critical if you want to get rid of wasps in your home and to reduce the risk of being stung.

Wasp nest Treatment Manchester Stockport Cheshire  £59.50

Manchester Pest Control is an independent pest control company offering exceptional and effective wasp nest treatment services. Sometimes however, treatment is not enough and the nest will need to be removed. This does incur extra costs.

Usually nests should be left once treated as they are never reused by wasps due to hygiene reasons. Read about the lifecycle of the wasp here.

But in some locations the nest needs to be removed. This is done after the usual treatment process, either later in that day or the next day. If a nest needs to be removed quickly, then there are rapid acting insecticides that kill the wasps inside the nest instantly, although wasps out foraging are unaffected.
Keep in mind that not all pest controllers have fast acting insecticides, so if you need an emergency wasp nest removal, check that the controllers are able to perform the task.

Most people will only have to deal with a wasp’s nest a few times in their lives. We usually encounter customers who have never had a nest on their property before. Their first response assumes removing the nest is a necessary course of action, but there are in fact good reasons for leaving the nest in place once it has been treated.

Typical insecticide dust is long lasting, and is not harmful to humans and other mammals. When a nest is treated the dust remains in the nest, which will contaminate any wasps from other colonies that attempt to raid the treated nest. These wasps will contaminate their nest too, resulting in another wasp colony destroyed. Treating one nest can therefore treat entire areas of wasp populations.
