Wasp nest control – What to look for:
The rapid urbanisation of the UK’s major cities has led to a huge increase in the number of terraced houses and purpose built blocks of flats, with a reduction in the number of wooded areas that wasps would typically build their nests in. However, it is still common to find wasp nests in urban areas and many people are entirely unaware of the presence of a nest in their home or premises. While wasps can be seen as a pest, it’s important to remember that they are an important part of the plant pollination cycle and provide a natural pest control measure for gardens and agriculture.
But when their nest is in your house, we of course understand that their presence is less than welcome and can pose some risks to you and your family.
To establish a nest in a property, a queen will first need to find a way inside. Due to their size, this is easy enough to achieve through cracks, gaps in tiles and roofs and many other places. This makes it quite difficult to entirely prevent wasps from finding their way into your property, but we can put measures in place in the most obvious places like chimneys, windows and roof spaces. At the start of the winter season the queen will have built a nest that may be no larger than a ball of golf. In most cases it will be concealed to start with within the void space of the outer wall, or at the back of a roof beam. As the seasons advance, the nest will grow in size and will often become far easier to notice. It is mostly in roof spaces that we have a chance of seeing very large structures.
Control methods and treatments:
Manchester Pest Control employs a team of professional, highly experienced pest control technicians who are fully equipped and trained to use several disposal methods. This includes top of the range gas powered Dusters which allow us to apply pressurised insecticidal powder to wasp nests and into voids for maximum effect. Our ladders and extension lances allow us to access wasp nests that would otherwise be difficult to reach.
Our technicians also have personal protective equipment that allows them to concentrate on the job in hand without fear of being stung. Without it, treating a wasp nest in a loft would be highly hazardous as not having the right protection and being distracted by stings when in a precarious positions could result in a fall from a ladder or roof.
If a large nest has already been established, the most efficient and economical way to deal with it is by destroying it immediately on-site. This will usually involve sealing it within a heavy duty plastic bag and physically smashing it within the bag to contain all the wasps as well. A wasp killing spray can also be used at the same time. However, a large nest can contain thousands of wasps, all of whom will attempt to protect their nest and queen. As wasps can sting repeatedly without dying, this can quickly become a very dangerous situation and should only be attempted by a professional wearing appropriate protective gear if the conditions allow it to be safely done.
Removing a nest in roof space should only be done by a professional pest controller. Please do not try to remove one by doing it yourself.
In normal circumstances the safest wasp control method is to treat from a safe distance from the outside of the building. Here our technicians would use a specially designed duster that send pressured insect powder straight in the entry point of the wasp nest. The dust will often reach deep inside the nest right away and will begin killing wasps immediately. If the nest entry is not easily spotted or accessible, the dust will instead be applied to likely access points in your home that wasps would use. This ensures that that wasps will coat themselves in the dust and introduce it to the nest themselves. The dusting should ensure that the nest is dead within 72 hours, including all adult and infant wasps.
Our guarantee:
The treatments provided by Manchester Pest Control are very effective and you will normally see the effect within a couple of days. However if there is still wasp activity 72 hours after treatment, we are more than happy to return and complete a second round of treatment free of charge.
We can offer a same day wasp nest removal service in the Greater Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas and Manchester Pest Control is committed to providing an affordable removal service. We have two fee levels which depend on where the wasp nests are located – the basic charge of £59.50 would be for a simple wasp nest treatment, typically a straight forward job requiring no ladders or extensions, with easy access at ground level, in an air vent at hands reach or from a window or a balcony. If the nest is in a harder to reach area, our technician will assess the access requirements and provide an updated cost. We treat as one any nests that are located less than a few metres from each other. If two nests are in different areas, the second nest will be charged at £20.00.
Of course, no action will be taken without your express approval
Honey Bees and Bumble Bees:
Bees are not aggressive species and should be left alone as they are beneficial to nature and their population numbers are already falling. They are naturally quite docile and will not sting unless provoked. By the time you take notice of the nest it will normally already be near its natural end towards the middle of summer. Even though they are not protected by law, wild bees are in danger of extinction and we therefore recommend relocation rather than extermination as a control method. Bee keepers are more than happy to come to remove a nest and relocate it at no charge, or for a similar fee to what a pest control company would charge to exterminate the nest. We would recommend checking the link below for contact details for a local bee expert.
http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/find_a_swarm_coordinator.php
There are alternate non-lethal methods that can be tried as well – we have used Velcro nets on windows to stop the bees from entering in the past with great success. Bees are only active for a few months so alternatives are worth looking at.
If the nest is inside cavity walls do not block the entry point as this can drive bees looking for an alternative exit into your living spaces. If the bees pause an unacceptable health and safety risk to the public then extermination as a last resort should be considered.
Please note that there is currently a shortage of feral honey bee colonies (wild bees), however bee keepers can easily and economically purchase honey bee lines from firms that raise them artificially. As such, it is not always worth the effort for bee keepers to remove a wild nest. It is also important to remember that Honey bees are protected by regulation and their nests need to be relocated.
Do not attempt to remove a bee nest without professional or local authority’s advice.
For further information about honey bees, we would recommend contacting The British Beekeepers Association: http://www.bbka.org.uk/
Hornet nest removal:
Hornets can be easily recognised due to their size and darker colouring when compared to wasps. Their nests are normally hidden but you will be able to see a tiny hole in the fabric of the building used as an entrance by the hornets. If a hornet nest is close to windows, doors or children in general, it is highly recommended to treat it without delay as their stings can be especially painful and they are sometimes aggressive. The same goes when you need to carry out some maintenance work in a roof space where workmen run the risk of being attacked. The treatment process for hornet nests is the same as that for a wasp nest and is just as effective.

Mice effects 70% of homes in Manchester Stockport Cheshire at some stage
Mice are a common pest in any urban area, and with the high prevalence in domestic properties, it stands to reason mice can also be present in busy commercial premises, like the many establishments Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire have to offer! Mice invade businesses for any number of reasons – not necessarily a reflection on hygiene standards – but things like nearby building works, flooding, cold weather or simply delicious food are all reasons why mice can be attracted to particular locations.
With many properties so close together in the area, it’s easy for mice to pass from one location to another, spreading rapidly and being a real nuisance. Furthermore, mice can present a serious health risk to users of the building with diseases such as salmonella, hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome and Murine Typhus spreading to humans through contact with mouse droppings and urine, that can often go unnoticed on kitchen surfaces. Considerable damage can also be caused by these tiny creatures with extensive nibbling of furniture, flooring and fabric of the building – mice have also caused many fires by gnawing electrical cables within walls and ceilings. Mice can enter a property through the smallest of gaps, especially where pipework comes throughs walls into kitchens.
Things to look out for…
• Droppings look like dark grains or rice or smaller – like a sesame seed
• Shredding bits of paper, foil or wood can be found near nesting or feeding areas. Often in corners of storerooms or cellars where busy kitchen staff don’t always have time to stop and look.
• You may be aware of scratching or squeaking sounds behind floors, walls or ceilings, particularly on entry to the property first thing after a period of being undisturbed.
• Holes in the packaging or other damage of food stuffs
Multiplying Mice
Mice breed all year round, and with 20 day pregnancy and litter of up to 12 each time, which soon reach sexual maturity themselves, a population can get out of control within months. Prompt effective professional action will stop mice ruining your business – catching 1 is simply not enough. Mice are between 5 and 10 cm long with a tail around the same length as their body. There will be no hair on their ears or tails, and can be brown or grey in colour.
Manchester Pest Control WILL solve your mouse problem
On arrival our experienced trained technicians will carry out a thorough investigation around the building including the exterior, in search of entry points, nest locations and possible food routes. It is possible to use UV dust traps which allow for precise tracking of the pests in some cases if they are proving well hidden. We will then use a process of seed baiting and trapping, (varies with individual premises and budgets) to ensure the problem is brought under control, as quickly, humanely and unobtrusive manner possible. A second follow up visit is included to assess effectiveness, re-set or replace any mechanisms or dispose of by-products accordingly. third and final visit 3 weeks later. We can also provide advice and quotations for external proofing to the building to ensure future entry isn’t possible. Manchester Pest Control fully guarantee the service provided to ensure you get value for money and a problem solved.

Sharps and Drugs Paraphernalia: an unsightly, dangerous nuisance in Areas Of Manchester Stockport Cheshire
Many of us wouldn’t worry unduly about picking up a piece of rubbish and putting it in the bin. However, when it comes to needles or syringes or other discarded sharp items and the potential risks or hazards they pose, it’s better to use a professional service such as Manchester Pest Control.
The Manchester Pest Control Sharps Removal Service gives complete peace of mind if you have been unlucky enough to have items irresponsibly discarded on your property. We aim to respond as quickly as possible to ensure minimal risk is posed to service users of the area, and as we take full responsibility for the appropriate disposal of the items, your general waste facilities remain safe and uncontaminated for normal procedures/personnel to carry on day to day business.
Manchester Pest Control will:
• Attend promptly and inspect the area to assess fully the risk/situation before work starts
• Remove all sharps, needles, and related drug items and dispose of as per legislation
• Disinfect areas as appropriate using professional standard disinfectant
• Provide documentary evidence including photographs of all items found on site and the details of work carried out
• Can also arrange future visits to regularly check the location so it remains “needle/sharps free”
Why use a Professional Sharps Removal Service?
Unfortunately, in society today, there are many who don’t act responsibly and use drugs amongst other items to regularly abuse their bodies. Individuals in these social groups generally lack care for themselves or others, may have limited resources so will pass needles and items between them before throwing them away carelessly without regard for where or how they do so. They are also at high risk of having a serious life-threatening disease such as HIV and Hepatitis both of which can be transmitted to others via an accidental needle prick.
Needles and syringes have been in found in places like children’s play parks or derelict areas and young children have been known to pick these up out of curiosity or to trip and fall onto the sharp, piercing the skin. People have also found these in public bins when placing their own rubbish inside and catching their hand on the end of the needle. Hence there are strict laws in place regarding safe disposal of hazardous /medically contaminated items such as this.
All technicians at Manchester Pest Control are fully trained and insured in all aspects of sharps removal and drug related items and use industrial personal protection equipment to carry out safe removal and disposal as required.
So whether you are a Council, letting agent, private landlord or housing association, an educational establishment or a construction/demolition company, if you find unwanted sharps, call Manchester Pest Control for an affordable, professional removal service.

A straight forward approach to removing Squirrels from your Property
A small furry visitor carrying fleas and ticks, and likely to destroy a property inside and out with their extensive chewing? Squirrels may be charming but best viewed from afar and not in built up areas of Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire!
Luckily Manchester Pest Control offers a safe and effective squirrel control service throughout the area, to both residential and commercial properties. Our methods do not cause any unnecessary suffering to the animal and once trapped, they will be taken away from the problem area. Furthermore we offer:
- A flexible service, available seven days a week including common holiday periods
- A guarantee – our service will resolve your squirrel problem!
Are Squirrels really that bad, compared to other vermin?
Whilst UK native red squirrels are threatened as a species, when squirrels are causing problems its most likely a grey squirrel which were introduced to the UK from America for the purposes of sport and food! During mild weather they’re happy in tree-dense areas such as parks but as weather gets colder they quickly seek warmer places to nest. They’ve been driven to built up populated areas for so long now they can no longer be frightened away or have a fear of human beings. Squirrels are very territorial so if they have claimed your loft or garage they will guard it with a fierce determination, which can prove challenging from a pest control point of view. You are likely to hear a squirrel in the property before you see it as they are noisy critters, and you may start to notice teeth marks in basements or lofts. Eventually you will see it going in and out frequently on one of its many food runs. Simply blocking the hole to prevent re-entry doesn’t work and they tend to do more damage making new entry points.
To summarise, once a squirrel has claimed your home, it will:
- Cause damage gnawing on woodwork and other surfaces, especially fascias and rafters
- Carry fleas and ticks into the property which can then get into soft furnishings causing further problems for humans and family pets
- Chew electrical cables and pipes creating various hazards that ultimately can cause big safety issues.
- Be difficult to move on without specialist help from experienced pest controllers like Manchester Pest control
How do Manchester Pest Control tackle a squirrel problem?
Contacting us as soon as you notice or suspect you have a problem is best rather than waiting until damage or noise is extensive – the earlier we can deploy our methods before the squirrel gets too settled, the better!
- A thorough inspection will take place by a trained, experienced professional. They will search the full property to get a comprehensive overview of the squirrels behaviour and routes in and out.
- Specialist traps and poisons will be deploy in a structured manner, ensuring safety for humans but certain to catch the attention of the rodent, trapping it instantly.
- All traps and contents will be fully and carefully removed, and disposed of according to pest control regulations, without causing suffering to the animal.
- Our technician will re-check the property to ensure procedures have been effective and offer advice and assistance with prevention a reoccurrence.

Mouse in the house in Manchester? Mice in the Workplace? Manchester pest control are experts in dealing with mice
While an unwanted mouse population may spiral out of control, our costs for extermination won’t. If you become infested with mice, we offer a fixed cost service, as we know how invasive vermin can be.
Whether you are a business or a home owner, we never charge for site surveys. To maximise the advantage in the battle against your furry pests, we still aim for a fast, efficient 24 hour service for pest control treatment to fully commence.
Particularly with businesses and the potential variations in size and environment, we will always carry out on site to assess the scale and particulars of the infestation, to ensure we can tackle the situation effectively with minimal disruption to your day to day routine. We will clarify numbers and locations of the mice, leaving you to earn a living!
We have summarized details of this service below but don’t hesitate to call us on 0161 448 1782 for clarification of any aspects, whether it’s cost or technical details, one of our professional specialists will discuss the process in full.
What happens during the treatment process?
A light to medium infestation can usually be remedied with a few visits carried out over a 3-4 week period.
Mouse bait boxes will be placed at strategic locations throughout the premises, each containing a rodenticide which is fatal to mice. Don’t worry as all boxes are locked by key and can’t be crushed either – they are specially designed so small children and most pets can’t access the contents in any way. Stations can be placed discreetly such as under fixtures and fittings or behind furniture, inside cupboards and so on. In larger commercial premises they can also be placed in basements or electrical cupboards, boiler rooms or even below raised floors.
For subsequent visits, the technician will assess station locations for effectiveness, and moving them if needed, as well as checking every station and refreshing the contents, safely removing any visible waste elements created by the process.
They will also carry out, as part of the standard service should you require the service at a Extra cost, basic mouse proofing like blocking gaps around skirting boards or pipes. Furthermore the technician will look at housekeeping or hygiene arrangements that may be impacting on the situation, suggesting improvements if appropriate.
Please note, any food preparation areas, equipment or surfaces MUST be hot washed immediately before use, if mice are suspected. Bacteria from their urine can cause illness so stored food should be checked for signs of mouse activity regularly and disinfecting wiping carried out to control bacteria transfer.
House Mouse: Summary facts
The house mouse has a unique musky smell which can be the first indicator they are nearby, but they can be easily recognised by their large ears and eyes set in a relatively small head, and a long tail (as long as rest of the body and head put together). They can sometimes be confused for young brown rats but they will have small ears/eyes. House mice tend to be the same colour all over – normally brown or light grey, but fur colour does vary and can even appear very dark. Whilst mainly active at night, they can be seen during the day, especially if they are feeding a litter or are well established in the environment and food supplies are under pressure. Their agility is impressive – a house mouse can run up vertical surfaces with minimal texture, and along horizontal cables. A true acrobat and can jump from the floor onto a flat surface. In fact they can jump 30 cm straight into the air (in human terms, jump onto the roof of a house!). Down isn’t a problem either as a mouse can jump down twelve foot safely (a human jumping off a ten storey building without injury). So where do they get the energy from?
Mice will eat anything, but anything of a seed-like or grain natures are particular favourites, along with sweet items which smell particularly tasty. A fully grown mouse needs a minimum of 3g of food and 3ml of water to survive, and even with a full tummy an adult mouse will only weigh around 30 grams. Given a plentiful supply of food they will still forage and hide extra for future sustenance. Most of their water comes from the food itself so even with water supply cut off, mice are adept at survival. Did you know a mouse can even go for a longer time without drinking than camels? However, it does mean their bladders are poorly trained, so droplets of urine will be all around areas the mice inhabit.
What goes in must come out – found shiny black grains of rice lying about? These are recent faeces of a house mouse! If these small grains of rice are dull black, the good news is the droppings are older in origin.
Mice typically gnaw small, clean holes about 3-4 centimetres in diameter, however if a biro pen can fit in a hole so can a house mouse! While they can nest outside in ground burrows or general rubbish, they use soft materials for their nests such as insulation, furniture stuffing or paper. Common sites for nests include inside furniture or appliances, drawers or boxes, even inside ceiling voids or cavity walls.
Nice comfortable nests, and a food supply, are perfect breeding grounds, and it’s no surprise mice numbers multiply exponentially. A mouse can have as many as 8 litters in a year, with anything from 4 to 16 young in each. Factor in each new born mouse becomes sexually mature by the time it is 12 weeks old, and you can understand why prompt action is crucial to get your unwanted furry visitors under control.
If you see a mouse, call us out, as there are likely to be many more mice you can’t see in the building.

Treatment Details on Common Pests
As an overview, we provide some basic information on common pests, showing you how we operate with the best services on the market:
3 step rat and mouse pest control
- On our first visit we make a full risk assessment of the premises to know precisely where the rats and mice are gaining entry to the property.
- Comprehensive treatment is then applied to the property to efficiently eliminate the infestation
- This is followed by a full pest-proofing of the premises to prevent further infestation (Which will incur a extra cost)
4 step cockroach pest control
- We initially undertake a full risk assessment and survey of the property to assess what factors are contributing to the cockroach infestation, locating their source and noting their species.
- For large infestations we may use a spray treatment initially to reduce the population
- The long term solution uses insecticide gel baits which the cockroaches eat, killing off the entire colony over time.
- Finally, we lay glue traps to capture cockroaches, which help us monitor the efficacy of the long term treatment.
3 step moth pest control
- Our first step applies a residual based insecticide on all carpets and soft furnishings which kill the moths on contact.
- Fumigation treatment is the applied to the affected areas, which draw out the moths from their shelters within the property, and ultimately kills them.
- Going forward, we advise clients not to vacuum or clean the carpets and furnishing affected for the following two weeks, ensuring that the insecticide remains in place to kill remaining moths and moth larvae.
4 step ant pest control
- We begin with a complete risk assessment and survey of the property, determining the source of ant infestation and the contributing factors.
- A residual based insecticide spray to treat all the affected areas internally and externally is applied. Common areas include patio gardens and window frames – this will kill all ants on contact.
- Going forward we encourage clients not to clean the surfaces with treatment, so that the insecticide is more effective, killing any further ants that come into contact with it.
- Remaining ants are killed by the ant control baits we use, with pharoe ants bringing the poison back to their nests.
5 step bed bugs pest control
- A visual survey of the property is needed first to see the level of the infestation and how widely it has spread across the property.
- Clients are then informed and advised on the needed preparation to take.
- All affected areas are applied with a residual based insecticide spray. The spray kills bed bugs on contact, and prevents the growth of their eggs.
- We advise refraining from housework, not cleaning the carpets and furnishings for the following two weeks, allowing the insecticide to kill further bed bugs.
- The same treatment is repeated after two weeks.
