Generally it is good practice to have pest control at your premises, however, it is frowned upon by the Environmental Health Officers (EHO) if pest control is not in place.
How much damage to your business would it be along with reputation should a pest problem occur or be seen in the public eye?
You risk being fined by the EHO and prosecution by the general public; up to £20,000 per offence and it does happen on a weekly basis.
We aim to offer a pest control package where we place a rodent and insect monitoring programme in place whereby we generally carry out 8 visits per annum, spread out approximately 6/7 weeks apart. Why? This is to ensure visits fall between/during rodent breeding cycles.
Should there be evidence of rodents or insects, we react by either placing extra baits or spraying to control any problems .
The benefits of a pest control package are that you are covered by due diligence. As long as you have acted on the advice given by your local technician regarding housekeeping, proofing and stacking, you have proved you are taking a course of action we complete a pest control report on each visit and this is placed in our pest control booklet which is left at your premises.
The chances of any prosecutions is absolutely minimal, minimal risk of any pest being seen by the general public and shows consideration and care for your business.
In summary:
– Rodent control
– Insect control
– Insect sprays
– Supply and servicing of electronic fly killers

Insect pest control Manchester Stockport Cheshire
As insects are smaller than rats, mice and birds, it is much easier for them to find their way inside home and business properties by a variety of means such as cracks, airbricks, open windows, gaps between roof tiles, or even hitching a lift inside furniture or on clothing. It is also possible for their presence to go undetected for quite some time, meaning that you can have an infestation on your hands before you know it!
At Manchester Pest Control we have dealt with many kinds of insect infestations in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. Depending on the type of insect we are dealing with, there are different factors to consider in terms of risks to health and the extent of the damage they can cause. Here we’ll provide profiles on five different types of invasive insect, and outline what we can do to eliminate them fully from your property.
1. Ants
In the UK, ants are not considered amongst the most harmful of insects as they are not known carriers of any contagious diseases. However, it is not recommended that you consume food contaminated by ants. If you own a catering establishment, customers will view the presence of ants as a sign of poor hygiene standards. Some species of ants have been known to bite, which could be a more serious problem if someone disturbs a nest and is bitten by many ants at the same time. Severe allergic reactions are discussed further in the section on wasps below.
An ant colony may have a population in the thousands, though this consists primarily of worker ants whose job it is to forage for food. If a single worker ant finds an available food source, it will soon call in reinforcements to help bring the food back to the nest. If you find a trail of ants, you should be able to follow it back to an entrance to the nest. As the nest is likely to be buried out of sight, you will find it difficult to gauge the size and extent of it. Trying to seal the entrance shut is a fruitless task as the ants will dig another way in somewhere else. Pouring water into an ants’ nest will also have minimal effect as it is likely to disperse in the ground, just like rainwater does.
The most effective way of destroying an ants’ nest is with industry-recognised chemicals and equipment in the hands of a professional pest control technician. Manchester Pest Control provides a service which includes initial assessment to gauge the extent of the infestation, identify the species of ant (e.g. garden, Pharaoh’s, ghost), and then apply the appropriate solution, with a follow-up service if required.
2. Bed bugs
Despite the name, bed bugs cannot just be found in beds or bedrooms, and can quickly spread throughout furniture, carpets, and rooms of the home. In a block of flats, an infestation in one flat may spill over into neighbouring flats in very little time at all. If you stay at a hotel or B&B where bed bugs are a problem, they may hitch a lift in your suitcase or on your clothing, leading to you unwittingly bringing them into your home. The same goes for certain items of second-hand furniture that you might purchase if bed begs have already set up home there.
Signs that you may have a bed bug infestation are if you or other family members are being bitten in your sleep. Unlike mosquitoes, bed bug bites tend to form a straight line. Some people may react worse to the bites than others, as they can cause itchiness and inflammation, with the possibility of blood contamination as a result of scratching. Bed bugs are very small, barely half a centimetre in length, and tend to hide when the lights are on, but you may notice blood patches on your sheets if you have crushed any in your sleep; although they also will stain sheets with their darker faeces, which has a very sweet and unpleasant odour.
The market for bed bug pesticides is constantly having to keep up with the speed at which new populations of bed bug become immune, which means that many shop-bought solutions won’t do the job properly. At Manchester Pest Control we come equipped with steaming equipment which we combine with the latest chemical developments to ensure bed bugs are eradicated without any danger to your health. We will make several visits to your property, as bed bugs can take several doses of treatment before we can be sure they have been eliminated altogether.
If you own a hotel or B&B in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire, and have noticed signs of bed bug activity, contact Manchester Pest Control as soon as possible to avoid damage to your reputation.
3. Cockroaches
So far, the insects we have mentioned are more likely to cause irritation or discomfort rather than serious illness, but the presence of cockroaches in your business or home brings a whole new level of concern. Businesses in particular should pay close attention to what we have to say here, as a cockroach infestation can be grounds for business closure, huge fines, lawsuits brought by customers, and total loss of reputation.
The reason why these insects should not be ignored is because they are carriers of serious diseases and bacterial infections such as gastroenteritis, typhoid, salmonella, dysentery and diarrhoea. They are also very hardy, with some scientific studies suggesting they might be the only survivors if there was a nuclear war! There are many species of cockroach (e.g. American, German, Asian), although they are generally around an inch long with reddish-brown carapaces/shells and probing antennae. If you see one on its own, don’t be deceived as there are likely to be many more hiding out of sight.
Cockroaches prefer dark and dingy conditions and it is rare to see them in daylight. They can be found in sewer pipes and drains, but once they have gained access to your property, they will hide and lay large clutches of eggs in narrow, difficult to reach places, particularly if there is a heat source nearby. They will contaminate food in kitchens, as well as any surface they scurry across. They will also eat a variety of materials, from paper to leather, and secrete a sickly-smelling faeces which might be one of the things that draws them to your attention.
As with bed bugs, Manchester Pest Control can provide a thorough cockroach extermination service which it would just not be possible for businesses to do on their own. We know how difficult it can be to locate the hiding places of cockroaches, let alone be certain the chemicals you are applying will do the trick. So let us bring the benefit of our experience, and we promise also to be discrete in our unmarked vans that will not draw unwelcome attention to your business while we rectify the problem for you. Call Manchester Pest Control on 0161 448 1782 today or visit us at www.manchesterpestcontrol.co.uk
4. Flies
Flies don’t tend to hide themselves away like bed bugs and cockroaches do. There have probably been many occasions when you have had to swat one away because it’s been buzzing round your head or trying to land on your plate of food. As well as being extremely annoying, flies can transmit bacteria (of diseases such as salmonella, cholera, tuberculosis and typhoid) onto food and other surfaces they land on. When they land on food, they will vomit on it in order to make it more digestible for them, and they may also lay eggs which then hatch out as maggots.
There are many different types of fly, with the housefly being one of the most common nuisances. Horse flies can give a nasty bite which may result in a rash or swelling, sometimes attacking the body’s nervous system. Proximity to water sources may result in a large number of flies hatching out during the warmer months of the year. They are drawn to places where food is readily available, whether it’s freshly prepared or in bins that have not been sealed properly. They will also dine on the faeces of animals such as dogs, horses and cattle, which is another reason why you don’t want them landing on your dinner plate afterwards!
If you encounter a large number of flies in your home or business place, it is possible that you have an infestation, or it might just be that you need to tighten up your properties defences to stop them getting through. Either way, Manchester Pest Control can help by investigating the cause and taking steps to deal with it, saving you the stress and bother of having to chase after every fly that enters your kitchen, dining room or restaurant premises. Manchester Pest Control will fit screens that can keep flies out, apply insecticide solutions to affected areas, install and maintain fly deterrent equipment, and we’re also happy to offer practical advice as well.
5. Wasps
Our final insect has a sting in the tail. The common wasp may commence its life cycle each year with just a single queen waking from hibernation and building a nest, but by the end of the summer, that nest will be a whole lot bigger and can contain a population in the thousands. As the population of the nest increases, the insect population that wasps feed off begins to decline, making wasps more likely to target sweet food sources in kitchens, at picnics or barbeques.
Wasps can be highly aggressive, particularly if they feel their nest is threatened. Unless you find a nest early in the spring and it is small enough to remove or destroy without serious risk to yourself or others, we advise you keep away and phone in the experts. Being stung by just one wasp on its own can be unpleasant, but a whole nest-load will be an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. Some people may also suffer allergic reactions to wasp stings, with anaphylactic shock being the most life-threatening – if you witness someone suffering a severe reaction after being stung (e.g. swollen limbs, difficulty breathing, faintness, nausea) call 999 as soon as you can.
If you either know the location of a nest, or believe there is one close by, contact Manchester Pest Control and we can carry out an exploratory investigation to determine the exact location and size of the nest (if it is adjoining a wall cavity, much of it might be out of view), and the best method for disposing of it at minimal risk to people in the vicinity. Unlike members of the public, we have protective clothing and industry-available pesticides which help us to do the job effectively and without being stung in the process. We do advise that a treated nest is left for at least 24 hours before removal, to ensure all wasps have time to return to the nest and be exposed to the pesticides within.
Your local pest control provider
Manchester Pest Control’s services are available both to businesses and homes in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. We can deal with your insect infestation quickly and discretely so that you needn’t worry.
If you do try and deal with an infestation yourself, you may find it an uphill struggle as many of the DIY solution available to the public are not sufficiently effective, and some can be quite hazardous to health. Unless you can be sure of where all nests and eggs are located, an infestation can quickly return time and time again. And the worst thing you can do is nothing at all, as infestations don’t tend to disappear overnight – wasps can still do a lot of damage to a building’s infrastructure over the summer months if they get inside walls or ceiling space; and an infestation by one sort of insect may lead to infestation by other pests if it makes entry to your property easier and more appealing.
For a service that won’t break the bank but which will keep business and personal reputations intact, contact Manchester Pest Control for a quote on 0161 448 1782. Our service also covers a wide variety of other insect pests including moths, fleas and lice.
Hotels, B & B, and Guesthouses

Pest Control for Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, and Guesthouses
Are you an owner or manager in the hospitality sector in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire? If you are, you will no doubt be aware of the reputational risks that your business may struggle to recover from if health concerns are raised by guests or the Environmental Health Officer. Here, Manchester Pest Control outlines the areas of your business under threat from a variety of common pests, including but certainly not limited to mice, cockroaches, and bed bugs.
Guest rooms
As we’ve mentioned elsewhere in our blogs, bed bugs are not a sign of a untidy property – but they’re certainly not something that paying guests will welcome if they wake up covered in bites. Ironically, bed bugs are likely to be brought into your hotel by guests themselves! This is due to the constant turnover of visitors passing through from all manner of locations, and bed bugs taking the opportunity to hitch a ride in their suitcases and other belongings.
Bed bugs do not limit their activity to beds alone, and can be found in carpets and other furnishings. The females lay large numbers of eggs which hatch within a very short timeframe, and the growing number of bed bugs can rapidly spread from a single guest room into the corridors and rooms beyond, leading to a full-scale infestation. Manchester Pest Control will of course handle such matters – big or small – discretely, and we can also offer advice to you and your staff that will help identify a bed bug problem in its earliest stages.
Food preparation and serving
With the kitchens working overtime to cater to your guests, it can sometimes be possible for staff to overlook certain precautionary measures that would prevent or discourage pests. Instead, in the hub of activity, doors and windows might be frequently left open, food waste is not properly tidied up or disposed of, and work surfaces and floors may be given only a cursory clean. Is all food stored in air-tight containers and do staff clean down the back of or between units if there are spillages?
Clearly, you should have a policy in place that all staff are aware of and are expected to abide by, and they should be made aware of the implications if they don’t follow the policy to the letter. Kitchens are at risk from rats and mice, which also bring with them various parasites and diseases that can make people very ill. The same applies to insects such as cockroaches and flies. And if staff think it’s acceptable to take the risk, tell them to picture the consequences the moment any of these pests are seen by a visitor to your hotel!
At the first sign of any rodent or insect activity in your kitchen or restaurant, give Manchester Pest Control a call and we’ll be right round to deal with it. Even if only one mouse or cockroach is spotted, there could be many more hiding out of sight, and we have the tools and the knowledge that will ensure these are targeted and do not pose a future problem for you.
Access all areas
It is not just the areas where guests dine and sleep that need to be kept free of unwanted visitors. The structure and grounds of your hotel should also be checked regularly and kept in good shape in order to deter pests from getting in. Above ground level, there is the risk of birds, squirrels and flying insects accessing roof space if your roof is not in the best shape from cumulative wear-and-tear or storm damage. Once in, squirrels can eat their way through vital beams and wiring (even sparking electrical fires!), and a dead pigeon in a water tank is a sure-fire way of polluting the hotel’s water supply.
Manchester Pest Control can help to rid you of any pigeons or grey squirrels in your hotel’s roof space, although please note that if you find red squirrels or bats, these are protected species and you should familiarise yourself with UK law where these are concerned. We can also deal with or put in place preventative measures for rats, mice, ants and wasps in your garden as well as installing bird and squirrel-proof mesh, pigeon spiking (not harmful, but a good deterrent) and offering advice to help you and your staff more readily identify risks sooner.
Working with your local pest control experts
Please feel welcome to call Manchester Pest Control today, even if you have no visible evidence of a pest problem – it’s better to run a routine check every now and then to be on the safe side, and we’re best placed to do this as we know the kind of things to look out for that other people might miss. We offer a reasonable rate for this, and for our pest proofing services.
Together, working in partnership with hotels, bed & breakfasts, and guesthouses, Manchester Pest Control can help to significantly reduce the risks of pest infestation and damage to reputation. This service covers the whole of Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.

Integrated structural pest management – a brief introduction
We’ll try not to get too techie with you here, but we thought it might be useful to explain some of the principles that underpin Manchester Pest Control’s approach to pest control management. These principles are very important to us on both a reputational and a personal level. We believe in getting the job done in the most economic, socially responsible and environmentally friendly manner possible.
Effective diagnosis
If someone calls us up to deal with a bed bug problem, it would be costly and negligent to just spray insecticide all over the place without any thought for the welfare of the people and domestic animals who live there. The first step we always take is to accurately diagnose the nature and extent of the problem. Sometimes it might not be as bad as our client first thought. You might think your home is infested, but if you called us soon enough, the pests might only be located in certain parts of the property.
Accurate diagnosis requires an in-depth knowledge of the life-cycles and the habits of the many types of pest that invade homes in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. Once we can confirm what sort of pest we are dealing with and how widely dispersed they are, we’ll pick the right tools for the job, and we’ll advise you on what we are doing and why. We think it’s important that people understand why we are taking a certain course of action, as understanding helps to minimise any risks further.
Any pest control company that ignores the financial and health costs of its customers in favour of a quick but costly solution has only its own interests at heart. Manchester Pest Control will respect you, your home and belongings. We also believe it’s important to be respectful to the environment on behalf of our generation and those still to come.
Protecting the environment
Just as we won’t use unsafe quantities of insecticide inside your home or business, we are equally careful when dealing with problems outside of your property. If a pest control firm were to use the wrong sort of pesticides, or far too much of the right sort, the result could be disastrous. The chemicals could pollute the ground, the air, or water supplies. This could be extremely harmful to human life, to animals (livestock, garden birds, protected species), and damaging to the local and global environment for years to come.
At Manchester Pest Control, we are mindful of UK government and wider European policies and regulations which dictate the safe use of pest control methods. We endeavour wherever possible to purchase environmentally-friendly products which are known to work specifically on the types of pest we deal with. We will use low-volume sprays, targeted in the right areas rather than used indiscriminately. We are committed to disposing of captured rats, squirrels and other pests in a safe and humane manner.
To sum up: we don’t go in ‘all guns blazing’. You wouldn’t use a machine gun to get the fleas off your cat. We won’t use a ten ton nuke in your garden, business place or living room. Manchester Pest Control are 100% committed to maintaining a safe environment for all our clients throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.
