“I’ve found a wasp nest – what should I do?”

Wasp advice for home and business owners Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. £59.50 fixed price no extras

1) Perhaps the first question you should ask if you find a wasp nest is not “what should I do?” but rather “should I do anything at all?” And by this, we mean you shouldn’t think about removing the nest yourself. The only time it might be safe to do so is in early spring if the nest is not much larger than a table tennis ball. Even then, caution is advised as there is still a risk of being stung, so if you or anyone else in the vicinity has a history of anaphylaxis, keep a safe distance away and call in Manchester Pest Control to deal with the nest for you. CONTACT 0161 448 1782 or visit www.manchesterpestcontrol.co.uk

2) Wasp populations grow significantly in size throughout the summer months, and a large nest could have several thousand wasps living in it. Attempting to remove a nest of this size can be a recipe for disaster. It will anger the wasps inside the nest, who will rush to protect the nest, the queen, and her larvae. Even if it was possible to successfully remove such a nest, there will be many wasps still at large and they will act aggressively when they return and find the nest has gone.

3) The best solution is therefore to treat the wasp nest with a chemical pesticide which quickly eradicates the wasps within, and any wasps that return to the nest later on. The staff at Manchester Pest Control don’t take any risks with their clients’ safety or their own personal welfare, and conduct a full analysis of the situation before getting to work. We use the right type and quantity of chemicals to get the job done, and wear protective outfits that enable us to get up close to the nest without being badly stung.

4) After treating the nest, it is not essential that the nest be removed, as it no longer poses a threat and any residual chemicals will ward off exploring wasps from other nests. If you are thinking about removing the nest, this should not be done for at least two days after it has been treated, and protective gloves should be worn to avoid directly exposing yourself to any chemicals. Alternatively, for a further fee, Manchester Pest Control can return and remove the nest for you after the required time period has elapsed.

5) It is not always possible to remove a nest if the nest is in a difficult to reach location. However, we can assure you that nesting queens do not occupy old nests and will always begin their own nest from scratch. They may however nest close to a previous nest if there was something about that location that remains particularly appealing, so be sure to block up access points to any wall cavities where wasps have previously nested, and keep a close eye on likely nesting sites in the early spring so that you can identify and tackle a potential wasp problem early on.

Manchester Pest Control is available to treat and remove wasp nests in any location throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.
