Pest Control for Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, and Guesthouses

Are you an owner or manager in the hospitality sector in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire? If you are, you will no doubt be aware of the reputational risks that your business may struggle to recover from if health concerns are raised by guests or the Environmental Health Officer. Here, Manchester Pest Control outlines the areas of your business under threat from a variety of common pests, including but certainly not limited to mice, cockroaches, and bed bugs.

Guest rooms

As we’ve mentioned elsewhere in our blogs, bed bugs are not a sign of a untidy property – but they’re certainly not something that paying guests will welcome if they wake up covered in bites. Ironically, bed bugs are likely to be brought into your hotel by guests themselves! This is due to the constant turnover of visitors passing through from all manner of locations, and bed bugs taking the opportunity to hitch a ride in their suitcases and other belongings.

Bed bugs do not limit their activity to beds alone, and can be found in carpets and other furnishings. The females lay large numbers of eggs which hatch within a very short timeframe, and the growing number of bed bugs can rapidly spread from a single guest room into the corridors and rooms beyond, leading to a full-scale infestation. Manchester Pest Control will of course handle such matters – big or small – discretely, and we can also offer advice to you and your staff that will help identify a bed bug problem in its earliest stages.

Food preparation and serving

With the kitchens working overtime to cater to your guests, it can sometimes be possible for staff to overlook certain precautionary measures that would prevent or discourage pests. Instead, in the hub of activity, doors and windows might be frequently left open, food waste is not properly tidied up or disposed of, and work surfaces and floors may be given only a cursory clean. Is all food stored in air-tight containers and do staff clean down the back of or between units if there are spillages?

Clearly, you should have a policy in place that all staff are aware of and are expected to abide by, and they should be made aware of the implications if they don’t follow the policy to the letter. Kitchens are at risk from rats and mice, which also bring with them various parasites and diseases that can make people very ill. The same applies to insects such as cockroaches and flies. And if staff think it’s acceptable to take the risk, tell them to picture the consequences the moment any of these pests are seen by a visitor to your hotel!

At the first sign of any rodent or insect activity in your kitchen or restaurant, give Manchester Pest Control a call and we’ll be right round to deal with it. Even if only one mouse or cockroach is spotted, there could be many more hiding out of sight, and we have the tools and the knowledge that will ensure these are targeted and do not pose a future problem for you.

Access all areas

It is not just the areas where guests dine and sleep that need to be kept free of unwanted visitors. The structure and grounds of your hotel should also be checked regularly and kept in good shape in order to deter pests from getting in. Above ground level, there is the risk of birds, squirrels and flying insects accessing roof space if your roof is not in the best shape from cumulative wear-and-tear or storm damage. Once in, squirrels can eat their way through vital beams and wiring (even sparking electrical fires!), and a dead pigeon in a water tank is a sure-fire way of polluting the hotel’s water supply.

Manchester Pest Control can help to rid you of any pigeons or grey squirrels in your hotel’s roof space, although please note that if you find red squirrels or bats, these are protected species and you should familiarise yourself with UK law where these are concerned. We can also deal with or put in place preventative measures for rats, mice, ants and wasps in your garden as well as installing bird and squirrel-proof mesh, pigeon spiking (not harmful, but a good deterrent) and offering advice to help you and your staff more readily identify risks sooner.

Working with your local pest control experts

Please feel welcome to call Manchester Pest Control today, even if you have no visible evidence of a pest problem – it’s better to run a routine check every now and then to be on the safe side, and we’re best placed to do this as we know the kind of things to look out for that other people might miss. We offer a reasonable rate for this, and for our pest proofing services.

Together, working in partnership with hotels, bed & breakfasts, and guesthouses, Manchester Pest Control can help to significantly reduce the risks of pest infestation and damage to reputation. This service covers the whole of Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.

Rats: A public health nuisance

Rats: A public health nuisance

You’ve probably heard the old saying that wherever you are, there’s always a rat no more than two meters away. To some extent  that’s an urban myth – we certainly have no wish to worry you on that score. Sometimes though, they might be closer than you think. Or you might have seen one with your own eyes, or have reason to suspect that there are regular unwanted visitors to your house, garden, garage or shed. If you have a cat flap, you should be aware that your cat is not the only animal that can come through it, and rats are big enough that they might not be deterred by a cat – in fact, they could give a cat (or dog) a nasty scratch or infectious bite!

We’ve already discussed mice in another post, in particular the kind of health issues and damage they can cause. With rats, this is on a much greater scale. Rat bite fever, transmitted from the saliva of rats, is rare in the UK but has nevertheless hospitalised people in recent years and can result in death if not treated with antibiotics. Lesser – though still unpleasant – illnesses can be contracted from exposure to rat urine and faeces. Rats can do a huge amount of damage to buildings, eating through metals and concrete at an alarming rate. They can get into walls and roof spaces – you might hear them scratching about in the ceiling during the night.

Rats are attracted by the promise of food, but can also pose a problem during cold spells when they will be more likely to seek shelter indoors. Even if you keep your home in good order, it is often other external conditions that can bring rats to your door. You might be more at risk if you live near a refuse tip, allotment, or in an area where food outlets are regularly throwing out greasy food leftovers. If you live in accommodation with a rear alley where communal waste is discarded, some residents may not take appropriate steps to ensure bins are properly sealed. Once attracted in this way, rats are difficult to get rid of and will explore other local opportunities.

When you consider that rats have lived side by side with human civilisations for thousands of years, often travelling on board boats and feasting on the cargo, it is no surprise that they are such a robust and versatile creature and very difficult to get rid of. They are good swimmers, and you might be likely to encounter them if you live near a stream, river or drainage outlet. If conditions are right, they will breed often and with large litters that are also capable of breeding within 3 to 4 months. They are clever enough to avoid many shop-bought traps and poisons, which may kill or capture one or two if you are lucky but will not rid you of an infestation.

Manchester Pest Control prides itself on looking after the interests of homeowners throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. We have the professional experience and the industry-available tools to eliminate rats and keep them at a distance from you.

Mice can threaten your health

Mice can threaten your health

Cartoons and movies tend to give mice a much better reputation than they truly deserve. More so than their larger cousin the rat, who we’ll talk about at a later time. Although they might be smaller, mice are just as big a problem – in fact they can fit into smaller places than rats and so are more likely to find a way into your home. Their presence can go undetected for quite some time. But once they have found somewhere warm where food is readily available, they will very quickly breed and begin to wreak havoc on your property from behind the scenes (and within the walls!) We strongly advise you rid your home of mice before they become a major nuisance.

Rest assured, we’re not talking about household pets here! If you or any children in the family have a caged mouse, the main thing you need to remember is to wash your hands after handling or feeding it, and to clean out its cage on a regular basis. At the same time, do be aware that if wild mice are at loose in your home, any infections they carry could spread to pets that they come into contact with. And this also extends to you and your family if you consume food or touch surfaces that have been contaminated by mice. If you receive a bite from a wild mouse, we would urge you to get a tetanus jab as soon as possible to be on the safe side.

Still not convinced? Believe us when we say it, mice can eat their way through almost anything! (including electrical wiring, plaster walls, clothing and furniture) You would be surprised at their climbing ability and the seemingly ‘off-limits’ areas this enables them to gain access to. They can feast on stray crumbs dropped on the floor, but can just as easily squeeze into a cupboard or climb onto a shelf where food is stored, and will eat their way through cardboard or plastic packaging to get to the food within. They will urinate and defecate while they explore, and if you consume food polluted by their urine, this can cause damage to your liver and kidneys.

A single mouse on its own might look cute and vulnerable to some people, especially children, who should be discouraged from trying to touch or pick it up if it is an invader and not a pet. If you find a mouse or evidence of one, we would encourage you to contact us here at Manchester Pest Control and we will take steps to eradicate all invading mice from your property before their presence causes costly damage or ill health. There are of course a variety of traditional and humane traps on the market that you could try out, but few live up to the promise on the packaging or offer the same guarantee that we do.
