A straight forward approach to removing Squirrels from your Property
A small furry visitor carrying fleas and ticks, and likely to destroy a property inside and out with their extensive chewing? Squirrels may be charming but best viewed from afar and not in built up areas of Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire!
Luckily Manchester Pest Control offers a safe and effective squirrel control service throughout the area, to both residential and commercial properties. Our methods do not cause any unnecessary suffering to the animal and once trapped, they will be taken away from the problem area. Furthermore we offer:
- A flexible service, available seven days a week including common holiday periods
- A guarantee – our service will resolve your squirrel problem!
Are Squirrels really that bad, compared to other vermin?
Whilst UK native red squirrels are threatened as a species, when squirrels are causing problems its most likely a grey squirrel which were introduced to the UK from America for the purposes of sport and food! During mild weather they’re happy in tree-dense areas such as parks but as weather gets colder they quickly seek warmer places to nest. They’ve been driven to built up populated areas for so long now they can no longer be frightened away or have a fear of human beings. Squirrels are very territorial so if they have claimed your loft or garage they will guard it with a fierce determination, which can prove challenging from a pest control point of view. You are likely to hear a squirrel in the property before you see it as they are noisy critters, and you may start to notice teeth marks in basements or lofts. Eventually you will see it going in and out frequently on one of its many food runs. Simply blocking the hole to prevent re-entry doesn’t work and they tend to do more damage making new entry points.
To summarise, once a squirrel has claimed your home, it will:
- Cause damage gnawing on woodwork and other surfaces, especially fascias and rafters
- Carry fleas and ticks into the property which can then get into soft furnishings causing further problems for humans and family pets
- Chew electrical cables and pipes creating various hazards that ultimately can cause big safety issues.
- Be difficult to move on without specialist help from experienced pest controllers like Manchester Pest control
How do Manchester Pest Control tackle a squirrel problem?
Contacting us as soon as you notice or suspect you have a problem is best rather than waiting until damage or noise is extensive – the earlier we can deploy our methods before the squirrel gets too settled, the better!
- A thorough inspection will take place by a trained, experienced professional. They will search the full property to get a comprehensive overview of the squirrels behaviour and routes in and out.
- Specialist traps and poisons will be deploy in a structured manner, ensuring safety for humans but certain to catch the attention of the rodent, trapping it instantly.
- All traps and contents will be fully and carefully removed, and disposed of according to pest control regulations, without causing suffering to the animal.
- Our technician will re-check the property to ensure procedures have been effective and offer advice and assistance with prevention a reoccurrence.

Information about bed bugs
Problems with bed bugs Manchester Stockport and Cheshire
Bed bugs are unpleasant little insects that emerge from their hiding places at night and feast on the blood of people who are sleeping. They do not usually live in beds and bedding, and are more likely to make their homes in cracks, joints and gaps in bed frames, skirting boards and other furniture around the home. A bed bug infestation can quickly spread to every room throughout a house, and to neighbouring rooms or apartments in hotels and blocks of flats in the Manchester area. Bed bugs are not a sign of a dirty home or business, but they can ruin reputations and cause a lot of upset if they are left unchecked and allowed to become an infestation.
Bed bugs do not fly or jump, but they can crawl very fast and cover a lot of ground in the process. They tend to travel between properties in Manchester and nationwide by hitching a lift inside travellers’ luggage, second-hand furniture or clothing. Once inside a property, they will hide in gaps and cracks in furniture, bedframes, and around the edges of rooms in carpets and under skirting boards. They are more active at night, so you may be more likely to see them with the aid of a torch when the room is in darkness.
Knowing when you have bed bugs
Bed bugs are small (adults reach approximately half a centimetre in length) but can be seen by the naked eye and look a little like lentils: oval, and ranging in colour from dark yellow to brown. A female bed bug may lay as many as 300 eggs during her lifetime; these eggs are tiny, white and not at all easy to see. The eggs usually hatch within ten days, with newly hatched bed bugs taking up to 8 weeks to reach adulthood. During this time, they will shed layers of skin as they grow, so you might find mottled brownish shells amongst your sheets. Juvenile bed bugs will need blood to help them grow, but an adult may be able to survive a whole year without a blood meal.
Unlike mosquitoes, which bite more at random, bed bugs tend to leave a series of bites in a straight line. Some people may not notice that they have been bitten, while others may develop a reaction, with inflamed and itchy skin around the bite area which may cause discomfort for a number of days. Often, bed bug bites occur on the neck, face, arms and hands. Although a bite from a bed bug will not transmit disease, it can nonetheless be a great source of stress and upset for anyone who is being continually bitten during their sleep. You should avoid scratching bed bug bites as this could cause the bites to become infected, and Manchester Pest Control recommend that you see your GP if you are in a lot of discomfort, so that they can prescribe an appropriate ointment to soothe affected areas.
Other signs of bed bug activity include black spots (faeces) on bedding, as well as small bloodspots which may appear on bedsheets as a result of squashing a bed bug in your sleep after it has had a blood feast. If an infestation occurs, which will happen when bed bugs are not dealt with soon enough, rooms may begin to smell slightly musty due to a scent present in the glands of mature bed bugs.
How can I get rid of bed bugs?
There are steps you can take to deal with the immediate problem, such as giving your property a series of thorough vacuums, being sure to seal the bag and remove it from your property each time so that the bed bugs can’t get out and back into your home. Clothes and bed linen which you believe to be infested can be cleansed of bed bugs by washing them at a temperature of 60C, although you may decide to throw out certain items including mattresses and old furniture if they are heavily infested.
Although it may be possible to treat a bed bug problem with DIY products, they are often ineffective due to the difficulty of identifying and treating all locations where bed bugs may be hiding. Some products only deal with adult bed bugs but don’t eliminate their eggs, particularly if they are in hard-to-reach places. Bed bugs have also been known to develop immunity to shop-bought insecticides, which are not as effective as the industry-available insecticides used by the experienced technicians at Manchester Pet Control.
If you contact Manchester Pest Control on 0161 448 1782, we can send a technician around soon after your call, usually within 24 hours. Our technician will thoroughly inspect your property to identify locations where bed bugs are active, and will then determine the most appropriate action to eliminate them. We have a range of tools at our disposal, including steamers, rapid freeze equipment, and insecticides that we know will do the job whilst being safe for people and the environment. So don’t let the bed bugs bite – call Manchester Pest Control today!

Wasp Stings: everything you need to know
Being stung by a wasp can be a very painful experience. Here you will find a comprehensive guide about wasp stings and how to treat them, courtesy of Manchester Pest Control your local wasp control experts Covering Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.
How dangerous is a wasp sting?
The venom in a wasp sting contains a mix of chemicals which are designed to paralyze their insect prey. However, wasps also use their stingers to defend themselves (see reasons below). If a human being is stung by a wasp (although the same can apply for bees or hornets), the venom is injected into the blood stream, which can lead to different physical responses depending on individual circumstances:
• In most cases, the human body fights back and neutralises the sting. The location of the sting will still be painful for a little while, with a red swelling in that area, although this should clear up within a few days.
• In cases where a person is stung many times, the body may struggle to neutralise the quantity of venom and this could result in the individual feeling very faint, nauseous and in need of medical assistance to help them recover.
• Anaphylactic shock is the most severe reaction to being stung, and can be life-threatening unless the individual receives immediate treatment. A small number of the population do not have the antibodies in their blood to fight the venom from just a single sting, and this results in an allergic response that is outlined in more detail below.
Recognising the symptoms of anaphylactic shock
Unfortunately, where anaphylaxis is concerned, people often do not know that they suffer from it until they are stung. However, the symptoms are very pronounced and can occur very quickly, and it is important to recognise them for what they are. They could be some or all of the following:
• A rash that is red and itchy (and not just isolated to the site of the sting)
• Swollen hands, feet, eyes, lips and limbs in general
• Eyes becoming bloodshot, itchy or sore
• Breathing difficulty (caused by a swollen throat)
• Feeling dizzy or faint (due to reduced blood pressure)
• A peculiar taste in the mouth
• Feeling nauseous or actually being sick
• Experiencing a severe panic attack
If you believe you are experiencing anaphylactic shock, or see the signs in someone else, phone 999 straight away (or get someone to do it for you) as it can only be treated by medical professionals capable of administering injections of antihistamine to combat the venom.
Do wasps carry any diseases?
There are no specific diseases that wasps are known to carry. However, while they are foraging for food, their stingers may come into contact with bacteria on animal faeces or other unclean surfaces they touch. It is therefore possible that a wasp sting may contain bacteria which could infect the site of the sting. However, it is also just as possible for humans to infect a sting site themselves by scratching it, so care should be taken to clean the area of the sting and not to scratch it even if it is very itchy and tempting to do so!
Treatment of wasp stings
As mentioned above, cleaning the site of the sting is the best first step you should take. Unlike bees, wasps do not have a barbed stinger, which is one of the reasons why they can sting multiple times. If you’ve been stung by a bee, the stinger usually gets left behind, which is why bees only sting once and then they die – in such an instance, try to remove the barb as soon as possible as it will otherwise continue to inject venom from the detached venom sac.
There are creams and sprays available in the shops which can help to cleanse and heal stings, so it may be useful to think ahead and buy some of these as a precaution ahead of the summer. Otherwise, the sting can be treated with soap and water, and then the application of an ice pack (e.g., a packet of frozen peas wrapped in a dish cloth) can help to ease the discomfort by cooling the area of the sting.
Reasons why wasps sting
It may sometimes seem like a wasp or group of wasps have specifically targeted you even if you didn’t do anything to make them angry. There can, however, be a number of reasons why they are behaving in this way:
1) Without realising it, you may have disturbed their nest or come close enough to it that they feel the nest is under threat. They will defend the nest aggressively and in large numbers. If you find a wasp nest or believe you have one on your premises anywhere in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire area, contact Manchester Pest Control and we can quickly eliminate the wasp problem for you.
2) As the summer progresses, the number of wasps in a nest can become quite significant in size, which is another reason to stay away from nest sites and contact Pest control Manchester if you find a nest. As the wasp population increases, their insect food supply dwindles, which makes the wasps behave in a slightly drunken manner, and more likely to seek out sugary foods at picnics, barbeques and in our homes.
3) Wasp stings contain pheromones, which are powerful chemicals that enable wasps to leave scent trails for other wasps to follow, but can also communicate danger if a wasp believes it or the nest are under attack. This is why, if you swat a wasp that has entered your home, you may find that more appear in due course!
The best advice we can give if you encounter wasps and they are behaving in an aggressive way is to move away from them as quickly as you can, but without waving your hands in the air to try and ward them off – this will only make them angrier and more likely to sting you. Try to get indoors, or put a good distance between yourself and the wasps so that they lose interest.
Although Manchester Wasp Control can’t treat wasp stings, we can treat wasp nests, and we do so promptly, at a reasonable price, and with fast effects (usually the nest will cease to be a problem within 24 hours) so that you and your family and friends can get back to enjoying the summertime with less risk of being stung.

Fox Help
Often Copied, never matched!
eMail:manchesterpest@gmail.com
The fox is a native relative of the dog, common throughout Britain in Manchester Stockport and Cheshire areas they are Extremely adaptable, it is an established resident of our urban environment which we find people need help with in some cases were problems happen.
Habitat – Breeding – Diet
There has been a rapid spread of foxes into urban areas during the 20th century, particularly in the south of England. This has mirrored the growth in urban sprawl. Like people, foxes prefer suburban housing with large gardens where they can find shelter under shrubbery, sheds, and in secluded corners Foxes shelter in burrows known as earths or dens. An active den can easily be identified as it is likely to be surrounded by an untidy array of food remnants, faeces and miscellaneous items. Well worn paths to the entrance, which is about 25 cm wide, and decidedly unpleasant musty smell, will betray the recent presence of foxes.
Breeding:
Foxes breed once a year. The mating season begins in January when the eerie mating cries can be heard during the night. A litter of 4-5 cubs is born about late March, and the cubs remain exclusively in the den until about May By June or July the den will be abandoned, the cubs will be learning to forage for food and their playful activities will be evident. By early autumn, the cubs will be almost fully grown, and by late autumn the family begins to disperse, although in urban areas many remain in or around their original home territory. Some people believe the fox population is increasing but this is not the case. Fox populations are relatively stable and self regulating according to the availability of habitat and food.
The fox is an omnivore, eating birds, rabbits, small mammals, insects, worms, fruit, grassland a wide variety of scavenged food. In urban areas, scavenged food can constitute up to 50% of their diet as foxes eat what we discard.
So what’s the problem?
Many people derive great pleasure from urban wildlife and actively encourage them. Studies by the RSPCA have found that most people either like or are indifferent to the fox, and that regardless of attitude, few people suffer actual problems from foxes, and many ofthe problems are minor and easily rectified. However, for those who have concerns or are having problems with foxes, the following information may be of assistance.
Is the fox a health risk?
Despite fears, the fox does not pose a danger to people. Foxes are not naturally aggressive to humans, but like all wild animals, they may defend themselves if they feel threatened. Always treat wild animals with respect.
Foxes also pose no real danger to cats. Although foxes will scavenge the remains of dead cats, the actual evidence of them killing cats is extremely rare. Cats greatly outnumber foxes and coexist without serious conflict. In most cat/fox encounters, it is the fox who comes off worse, and many fox cubs are killed each year by pet cats and dogs.
However, pets like rabbits and guinea pigs are a natural part of the fox diet so need to be securely housed to ensure the fox does not get the opportunity of an easy meal. A chicken wire enclosure is not strong enough to deter a determined fox. Foxes also eat rats and other rodents and can thus help to keep pest populations in check.
The most common disease of the fox is canine mange. It is caused by a mite and leads to intense irritation, fur loss, and skin infection. Left untreated it can lead to death in a few months. However, it cannot easily transfer to humans or cats, and it is unlikely to transfer to pet dogs unless they come into close contact. It is easily cured, and any fox with mange should be treated to avoid suffering.
The moult, or shedding of the winter coat, can be mistaken for mange. It can make foxes look diseased, starved or mangy, but it is natural and harmless.
Problems with foxes:
Most of the problems people report involve damage to gardens, raiding of rubbish and the unpleasant smell and fouling associated with foxes. These can be a significant irritant to many people.
The area around dens is likely to be untidy and smelly and damage to gardens is almost inevitable, either from digging to construct the den or for food, or from incidental damage when cubs are playing. Foxes scent mark their territories and deposit their faeces in prominent locations. While this form of communication is important for foxes, it is also unpleasant.
Foxes are often blamed for scavenging and scattering rubbish, although this is also true of other urban animals including our pets. This problem is easily avoided by proper storage and disposal of waste. Rubbish, particularly food waste, should be securely stored, preferably in a bin with a lid, and placed out not earlier than the night before collection.
Some people are also disturbed by the loud cries of foxes, heard mainly during winter nights or in late summer. These are either mating calls, territorial disputes or cubs battling to establish top dog status. There is little that can be done, and the nocturnal disturbances don’t last long.
Fox Control:
Manchester Pest control can offer trapping programs to remove foxes that may be causing problems such as damage within the garden and noise. Traps are set in areas of activity and can be checked by yourselves or an Manchester Pest control technician. ( Traps must be inspected twice a day) All carcasses will be remove and disposed of in the correct fashion in accordance to local authority. In some cases proofing can be carried out. The fabrication of one way doors to allow the fox to exit an area but not be able to return can some times be enough to move the fox on.
Cluster Flies
Often Copied, never matched!
eMail:manchesterpest@gmail.com
cluster flies facts and problems
What’s a cluster fly, you might ask? It’s easy to lump all flies into the same category, but the easiest way to identify a cluster fly is if he’s brought his mates along with him! The name cluster fly literally refers to the fact that these particular flies are often found in large numbers, or clusters. If you have a garden with a compost heap, you might have seen a cluster of them in the vicinity at some point during the spring or summer months.
Manchester Pest Control is pleased to confirm that cluster flies are not known to carry any diseases, unlike the common house fly which has been found to harbour harmful bacteria that it secretes on the food and surfaces it lands upon.
So why are cluster flies a problem?
Cluster flies aren’t generally a problem all-year round, but they can be a nuisance when it gets to autumn and they start looking for somewhere to hibernate. Until then, they’re happy to spend the summer months outdoors living off a diet of earthworms, but when the temperature gets cooler, they start to look around for somewhere warm to sleep for the winter. You can probably imagine where they end up, or maybe you’re reading this blog now because your home has been targeted by them.
Although these flies are not a sign of an untidy home, nor are they disease spreaders, it’s understandable that local home owners in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire don’t want to share their living space with large numbers of them! It doesn’t take much for them to enter a home, whether it’s through an open door or window, or by more covert means: around the edges of a window frame or skylight, or the eaves of your house if your home has suffered wear-and-tear from the elements.
If a cluster fly finds its way in on its own, there’s every chance more will follow. Each fly transmits a scent, or pheromone, which attracts others to follow. If a large number of cluster flies find their way into your home, the combined smell of the pheromones they give off can be very potent – you might have noticed a sweet and sickly odour but not realised what it was. The flies will hibernate over the winter in locations such as your loft, or may remain within and around window frames themselves.
It’s therefore possible you might not notice or be bothered by them immediately. Maybe you’ll find yourself swatting away one or two every now and then and wonder whether they’re coming from. But by the spring the rest of the cluster will once more emerge and getting them out of your home might prove difficult. Also, once cluster flies have visited a property on one occasion, they have an annoying habit of returning. The best solution is to fully exterminate them in order to significantly lower the chances of this happening.
How do you get rid of cluster flies?
As with most unwanted home invaders, once they’re in, cluster flies can be very difficult to get rid of. This is particularly the case if you’re planning on trying to dispose of them yourself. First of all, you have to know where they are hibernating, although once they are inside a property, they may choose a number of hibernation sites around the house. It’s easy enough to insect-spray a cluster fly that’s visible to you, but there could be many others tucked away in cracks, crevasses and hard-to-reach places.
Loft space is a popular location for cluster flies to hibernate in, and they can be difficult to remove if the inside of your roof is cramped or not easily accessible by people. Pumping large quantities of insecticide through your roof hatch is a bit of a lottery as it may still not get rid of all of them, and as we’re always pointing out for the public’s own good on this blog, be very wary of the quantities and any combinations of insecticides you might be using as this could be more detrimental to your own health than that of the cluster flies.
Manchester Pest Control are specialists in the removal of many varieties of pests that invade people’s homes.
