Insect pest control Manchester Stockport Cheshire
As insects are smaller than rats, mice and birds, it is much easier for them to find their way inside home and business properties by a variety of means such as cracks, airbricks, open windows, gaps between roof tiles, or even hitching a lift inside furniture or on clothing. It is also possible for their presence to go undetected for quite some time, meaning that you can have an infestation on your hands before you know it!
At Manchester Pest Control we have dealt with many kinds of insect infestations in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. Depending on the type of insect we are dealing with, there are different factors to consider in terms of risks to health and the extent of the damage they can cause. Here we’ll provide profiles on five different types of invasive insect, and outline what we can do to eliminate them fully from your property.
1. Ants
In the UK, ants are not considered amongst the most harmful of insects as they are not known carriers of any contagious diseases. However, it is not recommended that you consume food contaminated by ants. If you own a catering establishment, customers will view the presence of ants as a sign of poor hygiene standards. Some species of ants have been known to bite, which could be a more serious problem if someone disturbs a nest and is bitten by many ants at the same time. Severe allergic reactions are discussed further in the section on wasps below.
An ant colony may have a population in the thousands, though this consists primarily of worker ants whose job it is to forage for food. If a single worker ant finds an available food source, it will soon call in reinforcements to help bring the food back to the nest. If you find a trail of ants, you should be able to follow it back to an entrance to the nest. As the nest is likely to be buried out of sight, you will find it difficult to gauge the size and extent of it. Trying to seal the entrance shut is a fruitless task as the ants will dig another way in somewhere else. Pouring water into an ants’ nest will also have minimal effect as it is likely to disperse in the ground, just like rainwater does.
The most effective way of destroying an ants’ nest is with industry-recognised chemicals and equipment in the hands of a professional pest control technician. Manchester Pest Control provides a service which includes initial assessment to gauge the extent of the infestation, identify the species of ant (e.g. garden, Pharaoh’s, ghost), and then apply the appropriate solution, with a follow-up service if required.
2. Bed bugs
Despite the name, bed bugs cannot just be found in beds or bedrooms, and can quickly spread throughout furniture, carpets, and rooms of the home. In a block of flats, an infestation in one flat may spill over into neighbouring flats in very little time at all. If you stay at a hotel or B&B where bed bugs are a problem, they may hitch a lift in your suitcase or on your clothing, leading to you unwittingly bringing them into your home. The same goes for certain items of second-hand furniture that you might purchase if bed begs have already set up home there.
Signs that you may have a bed bug infestation are if you or other family members are being bitten in your sleep. Unlike mosquitoes, bed bug bites tend to form a straight line. Some people may react worse to the bites than others, as they can cause itchiness and inflammation, with the possibility of blood contamination as a result of scratching. Bed bugs are very small, barely half a centimetre in length, and tend to hide when the lights are on, but you may notice blood patches on your sheets if you have crushed any in your sleep; although they also will stain sheets with their darker faeces, which has a very sweet and unpleasant odour.
The market for bed bug pesticides is constantly having to keep up with the speed at which new populations of bed bug become immune, which means that many shop-bought solutions won’t do the job properly. At Manchester Pest Control we come equipped with steaming equipment which we combine with the latest chemical developments to ensure bed bugs are eradicated without any danger to your health. We will make several visits to your property, as bed bugs can take several doses of treatment before we can be sure they have been eliminated altogether.
If you own a hotel or B&B in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire, and have noticed signs of bed bug activity, contact Manchester Pest Control as soon as possible to avoid damage to your reputation.
3. Cockroaches
So far, the insects we have mentioned are more likely to cause irritation or discomfort rather than serious illness, but the presence of cockroaches in your business or home brings a whole new level of concern. Businesses in particular should pay close attention to what we have to say here, as a cockroach infestation can be grounds for business closure, huge fines, lawsuits brought by customers, and total loss of reputation.
The reason why these insects should not be ignored is because they are carriers of serious diseases and bacterial infections such as gastroenteritis, typhoid, salmonella, dysentery and diarrhoea. They are also very hardy, with some scientific studies suggesting they might be the only survivors if there was a nuclear war! There are many species of cockroach (e.g. American, German, Asian), although they are generally around an inch long with reddish-brown carapaces/shells and probing antennae. If you see one on its own, don’t be deceived as there are likely to be many more hiding out of sight.
Cockroaches prefer dark and dingy conditions and it is rare to see them in daylight. They can be found in sewer pipes and drains, but once they have gained access to your property, they will hide and lay large clutches of eggs in narrow, difficult to reach places, particularly if there is a heat source nearby. They will contaminate food in kitchens, as well as any surface they scurry across. They will also eat a variety of materials, from paper to leather, and secrete a sickly-smelling faeces which might be one of the things that draws them to your attention.
As with bed bugs, Manchester Pest Control can provide a thorough cockroach extermination service which it would just not be possible for businesses to do on their own. We know how difficult it can be to locate the hiding places of cockroaches, let alone be certain the chemicals you are applying will do the trick. So let us bring the benefit of our experience, and we promise also to be discrete in our unmarked vans that will not draw unwelcome attention to your business while we rectify the problem for you. 4. Flies
Flies don’t tend to hide themselves away like bed bugs and cockroaches do. There have probably been many occasions when you have had to swat one away because it’s been buzzing round your head or trying to land on your plate of food. As well as being extremely annoying, flies can transmit bacteria (of diseases such as salmonella, cholera, tuberculosis and typhoid) onto food and other surfaces they land on. When they land on food, they will vomit on it in order to make it more digestible for them, and they may also lay eggs which then hatch out as maggots.
There are many different types of fly, with the housefly being one of the most common nuisances. Horse flies can give a nasty bite which may result in a rash or swelling, sometimes attacking the body’s nervous system. Proximity to water sources may result in a large number of flies hatching out during the warmer months of the year. They are drawn to places where food is readily available, whether it’s freshly prepared or in bins that have not been sealed properly. They will also dine on the faeces of animals such as dogs, horses and cattle, which is another reason why you don’t want them landing on your dinner plate afterwards!
If you encounter a large number of flies in your home or business place, it is possible that you have an infestation, or it might just be that you need to tighten up your properties defences to stop them getting through. Either way, Manchester Pest Control can help by investigating the cause and taking steps to deal with it, saving you the stress and bother of having to chase after every fly that enters your kitchen, dining room or restaurant premises. Manchester Pest Control will fit screens that can keep flies out, apply insecticide solutions to affected areas, install and maintain fly deterrent equipment, and we’re also happy to offer practical advice as well.
5. Wasps
Our final insect has a sting in the tail. The common wasp may commence its life cycle each year with just a single queen waking from hibernation and building a nest, but by the end of the summer, that nest will be a whole lot bigger and can contain a population in the thousands. As the population of the nest increases, the insect population that wasps feed off begins to decline, making wasps more likely to target sweet food sources in kitchens, at picnics or barbeques.
Wasps can be highly aggressive, particularly if they feel their nest is threatened. Unless you find a nest early in the spring and it is small enough to remove or destroy without serious risk to yourself or others, we advise you keep away and phone in the experts. Being stung by just one wasp on its own can be unpleasant, but a whole nest-load will be an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. Some people may also suffer allergic reactions to wasp stings, with anaphylactic shock being the most life-threatening – if you witness someone suffering a severe reaction after being stung (e.g. swollen limbs, difficulty breathing, faintness, nausea) call 999 as soon as you can.
If you either know the location of a nest, or believe there is one close by, contact Manchester Pest Control and we can carry out an exploratory investigation to determine the exact location and size of the nest (if it is adjoining a wall cavity, much of it might be out of view), and the best method for disposing of it at minimal risk to people in the vicinity. Unlike members of the public, we have protective clothing and industry-available pesticides which help us to do the job effectively and without being stung in the process. We do advise that a treated nest is left for at least 24 hours before removal, to ensure all wasps have time to return to the nest and be exposed to the pesticides within.

Manchester Pest Control’s services are available both to businesses and homes in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. We can deal with your insect infestation quickly and discretely so that you needn’t worry.
If you do try and deal with an infestation yourself, you may find it an uphill struggle as many of the DIY solution available to the public are not sufficiently effective, and some can be quite hazardous to health. Unless you can be sure of where all nests and eggs are located, an infestation can quickly return time and time again. And the worst thing you can do is nothing at all, as infestations don’t tend to disappear overnight – wasps can still do a lot of damage to a building’s infrastructure over the summer months if they get inside walls or ceiling space; and an infestation by one sort of insect may lead to infestation by other pests if it makes entry to your property easier and more appealing.
