Just thinking about fleas causes most people to itch. Fleas are hardy little creatures and as such, hard to eliminate.

What are they?

Adult fleas are parasites, living off warm-blooded animals, different species of flea living off different animals. Cat fleas are approx. two to three mm in size, brownish in colour, and are responsible for the majority of flea infestations.

Their increase in numbers in recent years has been caused by an increase in the number of people keeping pets and by the tendency for pet owners to neglect cleaning their pet’s bedding properly.

Central heating provides the necessary warmth needed for fleas to breed and fitted carpets provide relatively undisturbed environments for flea larvae to develop.

Flea bites appear as a tiny dark red spot surrounded by a reddened area which can be intensely irritating and usually persists for one or two days.

How do they live?

Flea eggs are about half a millimetre long, pearly-white in colour and are laid on the pet or in its bedding. Four to eight eggs are laid after each blood meal, a single female producing between 800-1000 eggs during her lifetime which may be as long as two years.

The eggs hatch in about one week into larvae which live in dark, humid places such as animal bedding and carpet fluff, feeding on debris and adult flea excrement. A cat’s bedding may support 8000 immature and 2000 adult fleas.

After 2-3 weeks, the larvae spin cocoons and pupate and may spend winter in this state. The adult flea will then be stimulated to emerge by the vibrations set up by a passing host. Development from egg to adult is normally completed in 4 weeks but at low temperatures will take much longer.

Control:

Regular cleaning denies fleas breeding sites and contributes significantly to their control. You should remove accumulations of debris from cracks and crevices such as the cracks between skirting boards and floorboards, and the whole area thoroughly cleaned.

Wasps don’t set out with the sole purpose of making our summers miserable, either from being chased indoors by them or having to nurse the unpleasant (sometimes very serious) stings that they inflict upon us. They are driven solely by the desire to build, feed and protect the nest, although unfortunately their close proximity to humans often results in what can best be described as a ‘clash of personalities’ – we simply get in their way, and their instinct is to respond aggressively when that happens.

Nest origins

When winter gives way to spring, the change in temperature wakes the hibernating queen wasp, who has spent those cold winter months hidden away, but now emerges intent on finding a site for her nest. She looks for a sheltered location, such as a tree, hedge, wall or the eaves of a house, and begins to manufacture the material that will form the very building blocks of the nest. She strips bark from trees, fences and woodpiles, combining it with her saliva to form the nest’s waxy-paper core, cell walls and outer shell.

The cells of the nest are where the queen lays her first eggs, fertilised close to the end of the previous autumn. She then makes it her business to find and bring back to the nest insects with which to feed the first grubs as they hatch. Once these have grown, the queen no longer needs to leave the nest and can focus solely on laying more eggs as she now has a force of worker wasps to forage for her. These workers will provide further building material for the nest and continue to bring food for the next generation of workers.

And so the process continues until, at the height of summer, the once tiny nest is now brimming with wasps numbering in the thousands. Unfortunately, there now comes a problem of supply and demand, as the number of insects on which the wasps typically prey have hugely fallen, and there is a greater likelihood of wasps coming into conflict with people.

Tracking wasps to their nest

If there are a lot of wasps coming and going from your garden, there is likely to be a nest nearby. Watching wasp activity from a safe distance can give you an idea about where they are returning to after their foraging expeditions. It will also give you tell you what is attracting them in the first place: are their certain flowers or shrubs that they are buzzing around, or do you have fruit-bearing trees? If you have been putting rotten apples on a compost heap or leaving the lid of your dustbin ajar, wasps will readily exploit this.

Observing where the wasps go will lead you back to the nest, which may be very obvious when you see it (expect to find something resembling a large, grey-white ball), or it could be concealed out of sight inside a wall, roof space, or underneath the ground even. It might be located inside the roof or wall cavities of your house or garage, in the rafters of your shed, or the eaves of a neighbouring property. If wood on the exterior of a property has become weather-worn and started to rot, wasps may have found a way through.

If wasps have found a way inside your home and the nest is somewhere inside, this may account for any that you keep coming across despite keeping doors and windows closed. If you haven’t been inside your attic recently, or looked it over fully, this may be where the nest is located, although it has been known for nests to turn up in the backs of cupboards and other places homeowners have not had reason to look inside for a while, so we recommend extreme care if you have reason to believe a nest is somewhere under your roof.
