Wasp nest control – What to look for:
The rapid urbanisation of the UK’s major cities has led to a huge increase in the number of terraced houses and purpose built blocks of flats, with a reduction in the number of wooded areas that wasps would typically build their nests in. However, it is still common to find wasp nests in urban areas and many people are entirely unaware of the presence of a nest in their home or premises. While wasps can be seen as a pest, it’s important to remember that they are an important part of the plant pollination cycle and provide a natural pest control measure for gardens and agriculture.
But when their nest is in your house, we of course understand that their presence is less than welcome and can pose some risks to you and your family.
To establish a nest in a property, a queen will first need to find a way inside. Due to their size, this is easy enough to achieve through cracks, gaps in tiles and roofs and many other places. This makes it quite difficult to entirely prevent wasps from finding their way into your property, but we can put measures in place in the most obvious places like chimneys, windows and roof spaces. At the start of the winter season the queen will have built a nest that may be no larger than a ball of golf. In most cases it will be concealed to start with within the void space of the outer wall, or at the back of a roof beam. As the seasons advance, the nest will grow in size and will often become far easier to notice. It is mostly in roof spaces that we have a chance of seeing very large structures.
Control methods and treatments:
Manchester Pest Control employs a team of professional, highly experienced pest control technicians who are fully equipped and trained to use several disposal methods. This includes top of the range gas powered Dusters which allow us to apply pressurised insecticidal powder to wasp nests and into voids for maximum effect. Our ladders and extension lances allow us to access wasp nests that would otherwise be difficult to reach.
Our technicians also have personal protective equipment that allows them to concentrate on the job in hand without fear of being stung. Without it, treating a wasp nest in a loft would be highly hazardous as not having the right protection and being distracted by stings when in a precarious positions could result in a fall from a ladder or roof.
If a large nest has already been established, the most efficient and economical way to deal with it is by destroying it immediately on-site. This will usually involve sealing it within a heavy duty plastic bag and physically smashing it within the bag to contain all the wasps as well. A wasp killing spray can also be used at the same time. However, a large nest can contain thousands of wasps, all of whom will attempt to protect their nest and queen. As wasps can sting repeatedly without dying, this can quickly become a very dangerous situation and should only be attempted by a professional wearing appropriate protective gear if the conditions allow it to be safely done.
Removing a nest in roof space should only be done by a professional pest controller. Please do not try to remove one by doing it yourself.
In normal circumstances the safest wasp control method is to treat from a safe distance from the outside of the building. Here our technicians would use a specially designed duster that send pressured insect powder straight in the entry point of the wasp nest. The dust will often reach deep inside the nest right away and will begin killing wasps immediately. If the nest entry is not easily spotted or accessible, the dust will instead be applied to likely access points in your home that wasps would use. This ensures that that wasps will coat themselves in the dust and introduce it to the nest themselves. The dusting should ensure that the nest is dead within 72 hours, including all adult and infant wasps.
Our guarantee:
The treatments provided by Manchester Pest Control are very effective and you will normally see the effect within a couple of days. However if there is still wasp activity 72 hours after treatment, we are more than happy to return and complete a second round of treatment free of charge.
We can offer a same day wasp nest removal service in the Greater Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas and Manchester Pest Control is committed to providing an affordable removal service. We have two fee levels which depend on where the wasp nests are located – the basic charge of £59.50 would be for a simple wasp nest treatment, typically a straight forward job requiring no ladders or extensions, with easy access at ground level, in an air vent at hands reach or from a window or a balcony. If the nest is in a harder to reach area, our technician will assess the access requirements and provide an updated cost. We treat as one any nests that are located less than a few metres from each other. If two nests are in different areas, the second nest will be charged at £20.00.
Of course, no action will be taken without your express approval
Honey Bees and Bumble Bees:
Bees are not aggressive species and should be left alone as they are beneficial to nature and their population numbers are already falling. They are naturally quite docile and will not sting unless provoked. By the time you take notice of the nest it will normally already be near its natural end towards the middle of summer. Even though they are not protected by law, wild bees are in danger of extinction and we therefore recommend relocation rather than extermination as a control method. Bee keepers are more than happy to come to remove a nest and relocate it at no charge, or for a similar fee to what a pest control company would charge to exterminate the nest. We would recommend checking the link below for contact details for a local bee expert.
http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/find_a_swarm_coordinator.php
There are alternate non-lethal methods that can be tried as well – we have used Velcro nets on windows to stop the bees from entering in the past with great success. Bees are only active for a few months so alternatives are worth looking at.
If the nest is inside cavity walls do not block the entry point as this can drive bees looking for an alternative exit into your living spaces. If the bees pause an unacceptable health and safety risk to the public then extermination as a last resort should be considered.
Please note that there is currently a shortage of feral honey bee colonies (wild bees), however bee keepers can easily and economically purchase honey bee lines from firms that raise them artificially. As such, it is not always worth the effort for bee keepers to remove a wild nest. It is also important to remember that Honey bees are protected by regulation and their nests need to be relocated.
Do not attempt to remove a bee nest without professional or local authority’s advice.
For further information about honey bees, we would recommend contacting The British Beekeepers Association: http://www.bbka.org.uk/
Hornet nest removal:
Hornets can be easily recognised due to their size and darker colouring when compared to wasps. Their nests are normally hidden but you will be able to see a tiny hole in the fabric of the building used as an entrance by the hornets. If a hornet nest is close to windows, doors or children in general, it is highly recommended to treat it without delay as their stings can be especially painful and they are sometimes aggressive. The same goes when you need to carry out some maintenance work in a roof space where workmen run the risk of being attacked. The treatment process for hornet nests is the same as that for a wasp nest and is just as effective.

Mice effects 70% of homes in Manchester Stockport Cheshire at some stage
Mice are a common pest in any urban area, and with the high prevalence in domestic properties, it stands to reason mice can also be present in busy commercial premises, like the many establishments Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire have to offer! Mice invade businesses for any number of reasons – not necessarily a reflection on hygiene standards – but things like nearby building works, flooding, cold weather or simply delicious food are all reasons why mice can be attracted to particular locations.
With many properties so close together in the area, it’s easy for mice to pass from one location to another, spreading rapidly and being a real nuisance. Furthermore, mice can present a serious health risk to users of the building with diseases such as salmonella, hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome and Murine Typhus spreading to humans through contact with mouse droppings and urine, that can often go unnoticed on kitchen surfaces. Considerable damage can also be caused by these tiny creatures with extensive nibbling of furniture, flooring and fabric of the building – mice have also caused many fires by gnawing electrical cables within walls and ceilings. Mice can enter a property through the smallest of gaps, especially where pipework comes throughs walls into kitchens.
Things to look out for…
• Droppings look like dark grains or rice or smaller – like a sesame seed
• Shredding bits of paper, foil or wood can be found near nesting or feeding areas. Often in corners of storerooms or cellars where busy kitchen staff don’t always have time to stop and look.
• You may be aware of scratching or squeaking sounds behind floors, walls or ceilings, particularly on entry to the property first thing after a period of being undisturbed.
• Holes in the packaging or other damage of food stuffs
Multiplying Mice
Mice breed all year round, and with 20 day pregnancy and litter of up to 12 each time, which soon reach sexual maturity themselves, a population can get out of control within months. Prompt effective professional action will stop mice ruining your business – catching 1 is simply not enough. Mice are between 5 and 10 cm long with a tail around the same length as their body. There will be no hair on their ears or tails, and can be brown or grey in colour.
Manchester Pest Control WILL solve your mouse problem
On arrival our experienced trained technicians will carry out a thorough investigation around the building including the exterior, in search of entry points, nest locations and possible food routes. It is possible to use UV dust traps which allow for precise tracking of the pests in some cases if they are proving well hidden. We will then use a process of seed baiting and trapping, (varies with individual premises and budgets) to ensure the problem is brought under control, as quickly, humanely and unobtrusive manner possible. A second follow up visit is included to assess effectiveness, re-set or replace any mechanisms or dispose of by-products accordingly. third and final visit 3 weeks later. We can also provide advice and quotations for external proofing to the building to ensure future entry isn’t possible. Manchester Pest Control fully guarantee the service provided to ensure you get value for money and a problem solved.

WASP FAQ: Read our Frequently Asked Questions below for further information
I saw a Wasp, does that mean I have a nest?
An occasional wasp flying away from your house or garden is likely to indicate your area has become the hunting ground for food or materials, rather than a building plot for a nest. Regularly seeing multiple wasps active nearby implies there is live nest near the location. Observing from a safe distance and noting where they are flying to will provide the location of the nest. Once wasps have gathered wood from trees, fences or waste, for building the nest or food in the forms of tiny bugs from shrubs and flowers, they will always return these items straight to the nest.
I’m not sure what a wasp nest looks like.
A nest can be built in a wide range of places even underground! While many have a cardboard/papery like appearance, the best indication is watching (safely) wasps repeatedly flying in and out of a small hole. This means there is a nest in that location. Once the nest position has been identified, please stay well away from the area and make call Manchester Pest Control as soon as you can.
Do I have to kill it? Will they just die anyway?
Wasps do die off at the end of the summer period. When the Queen stops reproducing, the wasps no longer need to endlessly hunt for food and building materials and having served their purpose in life, they naturally expire. However, a nest can contain up to 10 thousand insects, all with a strong instinct to protect their home and serve their Queen. With increasing numbers of people being fatally allergic to wasp stings, it’s best not to leave a nest active, in an area frequented by humans. Children and Pets with their inquisitive nature, despite warnings are likely to disturb nature in action, and stings can still cause a great deal of pain and discomfort to those who aren’t allergic. Many people are not aware they have such an allergy until it’s too late, and you are unlikely to know whether neighbours, visitors or visiting workmen for example, are affected by anaphylaxis.
Why do stings happen late in the year if they are dying?
A wasp, like humans, are not necessarily cognitively sharp towards the end of their life span! Towards Autumn when they are no longer needed to serve the Queen, they will head towards heat and light in a dazed state. This often leads them indoors. We have responded to many customers who have been stung while sleeping at night at the end of the season.
The Nest is still there – surely the wasps will come back next year?
Wasp nests never become active again or have a new set of wasps “move in” once it has been treated. They will always build a new fresh nest each season. When a nest has been completely removed after treatment, the wasps who were out working at the time of removal will come back and continue building in the exact same spot! After all they identified it as a prime location in the first instance. It may appear wasps are using an old nest again but they will be building a new one nearby, not using the same nest. Our years of experience at Manchester Pest Control has proven year after year leaving a treated nest in situ is the most effective way of dealing with wasps. Remember our service is guaranteed so if intimal treatment is unsuccessful we will revisit free of charge and make your home a wasp free zone!

Sharps and Drugs Paraphernalia: an unsightly, dangerous nuisance in Areas Of Manchester Stockport Cheshire
Many of us wouldn’t worry unduly about picking up a piece of rubbish and putting it in the bin. However, when it comes to needles or syringes or other discarded sharp items and the potential risks or hazards they pose, it’s better to use a professional service such as Manchester Pest Control.

We aim to respond as quickly as possible to ensure minimal risk is posed to service users of the area, and as we take full responsibility for the appropriate disposal of the items, your general waste facilities remain safe and uncontaminated for normal procedures/personnel to carry on day to day business.
Manchester Pest Control will:
• Attend promptly and inspect the area to assess fully the risk/situation before work starts

Why use a Professional Sharps Removal Service?
Unfortunately, in society today, there are many who don’t act responsibly and use drugs amongst other items to regularly abuse their bodies. Individuals in these social groups generally lack care for themselves or others, may have limited resources so will pass needles and items between them before throwing them away carelessly without regard for where or how they do so. They are also at high risk of having a serious life-threatening disease such as HIV and Hepatitis both of which can be transmitted to others via an accidental needle prick.
Needles and syringes have been in found in places like children’s play parks or derelict areas and young children have been known to pick these up out of curiosity or to trip and fall onto the sharp, piercing the skin. People have also found these in public bins when placing their own rubbish inside and catching their hand on the end of the needle. Hence there are strict laws in place regarding safe disposal of hazardous /medically contaminated items such as this.
All technicians at Manchester Pest Control are fully trained and insured in all aspects of sharps removal and drug related items and use industrial personal protection equipment to carry out safe removal and disposal as required.
So whether you are a Council, letting agent, private landlord or housing association, an educational establishment or a construction/demolition company, if you find unwanted sharps, call Manchester Pest Control for an affordable, professional removal service.
