5 Simple Signs That You Have Mice In Your Business Premises
Any infestation or problem with mice in your business premises can be disastrous, not only in terms of costs, damage and potential fines, but also in terms of your reputation – often the most important thing for any business. It is also important to consider the health hazards – all rodents and especially mice and rats carry flea, ticks and other parasites in addition to be carriers for numerous viruses and bacteria like Salmonella, E.Coli and Cryptosporidium. All of these can have serious harmful effects on the health of your staff and customers.
Remember that the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 states that if mice or rats are present in substantial numbers in or around your premises, you have an obligation to report it to your local authority.
For business owners in the service or catering industry, rodent infestations can be even more concerning. There are numerous laws and regulations in place to protect the health of customers and to ensure that food preparation and storage areas are clean and fit for purpose. If any signs of rodents are found in your premises by environmental health inspectors, you’ll receive warnings and be instructed to find a pest control specialist to deal with the problem. Failure to comply can result in large fines, closure of your business and even bans on working in that industry again.
For guidance on pest control procedures in the food industry, it’s worth reading up on official information from the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
So What Should You Look For?
Mice are more likely to be found in your premises during the autumn and winter months when temperatures drop and food is harder to find. They will be looking for somewhere warm and dry, with easy access to food sources and water.
It’s hugely important that you spot and deal with an infestation as early as possible as mice are very rapid breeders and their numbers can soon grow out of control. The longer mice are in your property, the more damage they will cause, so be sure to keep an eye out for the following signs:
1) Noises.
Scratching, nibbling, scrabbling and squeaking sounds coming from inside walls, under floorboards and behind furniture are all sure signs of mice being present. They are more active at night so you are more likely to hear them at this time.
2) Droppings.
They may be small, but mice produce a lot of droppings throughout the day. In just a single day, an average adult mouse can produce around 50-75 pellets. These are around 3-6mm long, oblong in shape and a dark brown or black in colour. Droppings tend to be concentrated around their nesting site, so if you see a lot of them in a small area the chances are you are close to the source of the infestation.
3) Evidence of gnawing.
Mice gnaw constantly in order to keep their teeth sharp and to prevent them from growing too large. You’ll be able to spot holes in boxes, notches in furniture or skirting boards and damage to wires and walls as soon as mice are present in your premises. Gnawing can be particularly dangerous if the damage is carried out on water or gas pipes and electric cables. In severe cases, it’s not unknown for this to cause floods or fires, so it’s essential that you carry out routine checks around your business property.
4) Strong smell of ammonia.
In addition to lots of droppings, mice will urinate as they move around rather than leaving puddles behind. This trail or urine, mixed with fur and dirt from their bodies, will leave dark smears along walls and skirting boards where mice travel frequently and is easy to spot. There will also be a strong smell of ammonia, which will grow the closer you are to their nest.
5) Nesting materials.
To build their nests, mice will rip apart soft materials and shred them. In your premises, this could mean tearing holes out of furniture cushions or destroying other soft furnishings like carpets and curtains. If you come across any soft, fluffy bundles of material you could be looking at part of a mouse nest.
If you spot any of these signs in your premises, we know it can be tempting to try and deal with the situation yourself. However we would not recommend trying to clean up mouse faeces, urine or nesting material without the right equipment and training or without getting professional advice. Contact with feral mice can cause potentially life-threatening infections and diseases such as Leptospirosis.
