Knowing when you have a wasp nest problem
Summer’s here and the wasps are out in force once again, and we all know what a nuisance they can be. You’re only likely to see more of them as the summer progresses – what will have started off in early spring as a small nest containing just the queen wasp and her first small brood of workers, will by now be a much larger nest of several thousand wasps. Although they live off the sweet-tasting larvae of other insects such as greenfly, this food supply often runs low as the wasp population gets larger, which leads to wasps searching out other sweet foods – and this is where they become more of a problem for people wanting to enjoy their picnics, BBQs, and other outdoor activities.
In this blog post, Manchester Pest Control outlines how to find and deal with a wasp nest if you believe there is one in your immediate area and the wasps are making life difficult for you. Please be sure to familiarise yourself with the symptoms of anaphylactic shock in case you or a family member is stung while you are looking for the site of the nest, and be careful at all times contact www.manchesterpestcontrol.co.uk 0161 448 1782
1) Locating the wasp nest
A large number of wasps in the vicinity of where you live is likely to be traceable back to a nest somewhere nearby. The best way to find the nest (exercising extreme caution in the process) is to observe where the wasps go once they have finished exploring your garden. Wasp nests are usually found in places that provide some protection from the elements. Outdoors, a nest might be attached to a tree or inside an old stone wall, but you may find that it’s closer to home than that: inside a wall cavity, the roof or eaves of your house, your shed or garage.
2) Identifying a wasp nest
Wasps construct their nests from a material that they make using a combination of their saliva and wood pulp which they have stripped from available trees, fences and woodpiles. The material, when it solidifies, has a grey-white papery quality. Inside, there will be cells like in a bees nest, although these do not contain honey; only eggs. If you find a wasp nest in the early spring, it may well be smaller than your clenched fist, with only a dozen or so wasps inside, but by late summer it could be bigger than a football, with a huge population housed within.
If the wasp nest is not directly visible (e.g., inside a roof or wall), it can be difficult to assess the size of it although you may get some idea from the amount of wasp activity near the entry point.
3) Removing a wasp nest
Unless you have found a wasp nest early in the year when it is still fairly small, you should not go too close or attempt to remove a wasp nest yourself. Even if you are not allergic to wasp stings, being stung by a single wasp can be unpleasant, but being stung repeatedly by a hundred or more angry wasps is not likely to leave you in good physical condition afterwards. If they feel the nest is under threat, they will attack and may also sting other people nearby, which may not leave you popular with neighbours or other family members.
Removal of the wasp nest is not an appropriate solution once the nest has grown beyond the size of a tennis ball – at this point, chemical treatment will be required to eradicate the population of the nest, and we recommend you call us here at Manchester Pest Control rather than expose yourself or others to any risk.
4) Getting the job done professionally
At Manchester Pest Control, we provide an expert wasp nest elimination service at competitive rates for our customers in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.
