Bed bugs: A nightmare in Manchester homes

Bed bugs: A nightmare in homes

Here’s an unpleasant pest we’ve been itching to tell you about, and unfortunately you might have been itching too…

At Manchester Pest Control we do appreciate that this is no laughing matter. People will react to the presence of bed bugs in different ways, with some not experiencing much in the way of discomfort at all, so it can be hard to know when you have an infestation under your roof. Some family members or guests may have visible bites, which it is easy to confuse with being bitten by a mosquito, though a mosquito will bite at random. A series of bites in a straight line is more likely to be the work of a bed bug. This can cause unpleasant itching or a rash, which scratching could then cause to become infected.

We should stress that bed bugs aren’t dangerous, but this doesn’t make them any easier to live with. They’re not even a sign of a dirty home, but your home can feel dirty knowing they’re in it. And it’s understandable that you could be finding it difficult to sleep, either because you’re being bitten, worrying about being bitten, or just plain aware of their presence when you try and tuck down at night. It’s not something you want your family, house guests and pets being exposed to on a permanent basis either.

You can see bed bugs with the naked eye – adults are about half a centimetre long, rust-coloured, and have flat bodies which they can squeeze into tiny cracks and crevices, the seams of mattresses, and in and around headboards. You might find dead ones in your sheets if you have rolled onto them in the night. They don’t just confine their activity to the bedroom, however, and can quickly spread all over the home, to other furniture and carpets. A single female can lay up to 500 eggs in just a two month period. In a block of flats, it is very easy for them to spread from one flat to another.

Bed bugs may also enter your home on clothing or in luggage if you have been holidaying at a hotel or B&B where they are a problem. They can arrive in second-hand furniture or rugs. And once they are in your home, they can be very difficult to get rid of. Sometimes you might think the problem has gone away on its own or with a shop-bought remedy, but it is possible for a bed bug to survive almost a whole year without feeding. They have also become immune to an increasing number of insecticides – in fact, some insecticides used in close proximity to where you sleep may be more harmful to you than to the bed bugs!

Manchester Pest Control provides a safe, effective and discrete service to homes, hotels and B&Bs in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas. If you want the nightmare of bed bugs to be over, contact us today and we’ll ensure you sleep easy.

Rats: A public health nuisance

Rats: A public health nuisance

You’ve probably heard the old saying that wherever you are, there’s always a rat no more than two meters away. To some extent  that’s an urban myth – we certainly have no wish to worry you on that score. Sometimes though, they might be closer than you think. Or you might have seen one with your own eyes, or have reason to suspect that there are regular unwanted visitors to your house, garden, garage or shed. If you have a cat flap, you should be aware that your cat is not the only animal that can come through it, and rats are big enough that they might not be deterred by a cat – in fact, they could give a cat (or dog) a nasty scratch or infectious bite!

We’ve already discussed mice in another post, in particular the kind of health issues and damage they can cause. With rats, this is on a much greater scale. Rat bite fever, transmitted from the saliva of rats, is rare in the UK but has nevertheless hospitalised people in recent years and can result in death if not treated with antibiotics. Lesser – though still unpleasant – illnesses can be contracted from exposure to rat urine and faeces. Rats can do a huge amount of damage to buildings, eating through metals and concrete at an alarming rate. They can get into walls and roof spaces – you might hear them scratching about in the ceiling during the night.

Rats are attracted by the promise of food, but can also pose a problem during cold spells when they will be more likely to seek shelter indoors. Even if you keep your home in good order, it is often other external conditions that can bring rats to your door. You might be more at risk if you live near a refuse tip, allotment, or in an area where food outlets are regularly throwing out greasy food leftovers. If you live in accommodation with a rear alley where communal waste is discarded, some residents may not take appropriate steps to ensure bins are properly sealed. Once attracted in this way, rats are difficult to get rid of and will explore other local opportunities.

When you consider that rats have lived side by side with human civilisations for thousands of years, often travelling on board boats and feasting on the cargo, it is no surprise that they are such a robust and versatile creature and very difficult to get rid of. They are good swimmers, and you might be likely to encounter them if you live near a stream, river or drainage outlet. If conditions are right, they will breed often and with large litters that are also capable of breeding within 3 to 4 months. They are clever enough to avoid many shop-bought traps and poisons, which may kill or capture one or two if you are lucky but will not rid you of an infestation.

Manchester Pest Control prides itself on looking after the interests of homeowners throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. We have the professional experience and the industry-available tools to eliminate rats and keep them at a distance from you.

Mice can threaten your health

Mice can threaten your health

Cartoons and movies tend to give mice a much better reputation than they truly deserve. More so than their larger cousin the rat, who we’ll talk about at a later time. Although they might be smaller, mice are just as big a problem – in fact they can fit into smaller places than rats and so are more likely to find a way into your home. Their presence can go undetected for quite some time. But once they have found somewhere warm where food is readily available, they will very quickly breed and begin to wreak havoc on your property from behind the scenes (and within the walls!) We strongly advise you rid your home of mice before they become a major nuisance.

Rest assured, we’re not talking about household pets here! If you or any children in the family have a caged mouse, the main thing you need to remember is to wash your hands after handling or feeding it, and to clean out its cage on a regular basis. At the same time, do be aware that if wild mice are at loose in your home, any infections they carry could spread to pets that they come into contact with. And this also extends to you and your family if you consume food or touch surfaces that have been contaminated by mice. If you receive a bite from a wild mouse, we would urge you to get a tetanus jab as soon as possible to be on the safe side.

Still not convinced? Believe us when we say it, mice can eat their way through almost anything! (including electrical wiring, plaster walls, clothing and furniture) You would be surprised at their climbing ability and the seemingly ‘off-limits’ areas this enables them to gain access to. They can feast on stray crumbs dropped on the floor, but can just as easily squeeze into a cupboard or climb onto a shelf where food is stored, and will eat their way through cardboard or plastic packaging to get to the food within. They will urinate and defecate while they explore, and if you consume food polluted by their urine, this can cause damage to your liver and kidneys.

A single mouse on its own might look cute and vulnerable to some people, especially children, who should be discouraged from trying to touch or pick it up if it is an invader and not a pet. If you find a mouse or evidence of one, we would encourage you to contact us here at Manchester Pest Control and we will take steps to eradicate all invading mice from your property before their presence causes costly damage or ill health. There are of course a variety of traditional and humane traps on the market that you could try out, but few live up to the promise on the packaging or offer the same guarantee that we do.

Why is cockroach control necessary?

Why is cockroach control necessary in Manchester?

Restaurant owners and diners beware!

Cockroaches are a major problem for restaurants in Manchester.

To the owner: If you own a restaurant and a cockroach is spotted on the premises, this could easily be grounds for immediate closure, a huge fine, and irreparable damage to your business and personal reputation. Having cockroaches present in an area where food is prepared and served is a major health hazard. Any restaurant owner who does not take immediate action is jeopardising the safety of themselves, their staff, and the customers they rely on for business. So ask yourself, is it really worth the risk?

To the diner: If you see a cockroach, however nice the meal might have been to that point, you may want to think twice before finishing it. These insects are carriers of intestinal diseases such as dysentery and diarrhoea. They will secrete infectious faecal matter on any foodstuffs they can search out – food that could very easily be served to a restaurant full of customers with disastrous consequences. You and your dining companions shouldn’t have to tolerate this sort of negligence in silence.

So what can you do about it?

If you’re the customer, you should definitely complain! In the UK, we don’t like to make a scene – you might just decide that you’ll never eat at the place again, and share your concerns with a few friends and family members. This won’t help anyone else though, and the problem may only get a lot worse. And what if it’s a local restaurant you love to dine out at, and you’ve always thought of yourself as being on good terms with the owner? Do them a favour and tell them to call Manchester Pest Control quick!

If you’re the owner, please for your own sake don’t assume you can get the situation under control on your own. Where you see just one cockroach, it is inevitable that there will be many more hidden away in the gaps behind and between work surfaces, and in other places you might not expect to find them. These pests are nocturnal and rarely spotted in the light – they will hide until it’s dark, so it is difficult to get an idea of their numbers. The longer you leave it to deal with the problem effectively, the greater the infestation will get.

Manchester Pest Control has many years of experience when it comes to dealing with cockroach infestations. We are methodical and discrete in our approach – our response vehicles are unmarked, as the last thing we want to do is cause alarm. If the owner of any local business in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas contacts us, they are behaving in the most responsible way they can. We are cost-effective because we will make the problem go away, and will give clear advice to prevent it returning.
