Identification:
10 – 20 mm long, distinctive black & yellow banding and a narrow waist in the middle.

Wasps are typically social insects with new nests constructed each year. The queens, which are larger than the workers, overwinter in harbourages in buildings, under loose bark or even in old nests.
The wasp is commonly found in gardens and around the home and will build their nests in trees, bushes, holes in the ground, sheds and lofts we have found nests in all places over the many years we have treated  for wasps in Manchester Stockport Cheshire post code areas.

Biology:
A young fertilised queen wasp chooses a suitable site to construct a small golf ball sized nest after emerging from hibernation in early spring.
The nest is made from a mixture of chewed wood and saliva.
Within individual chambers inside this nest she will lay between 10 and 20 eggs, feeding the emerging larvae on small insects.
The first brood of adult workers called sterile females takes over the task of enlarging the nest and providing food for the subsequent eggs laid by the queen.
The size of wasp colonies will vary from year to year, but at its maximum nests may contain between 5 – 10,000 wasps.
At the onset of autumn, new males fertilise new queens, who then leave the nest in search of hibernation sites over winter to start new colonies the following spring.

Control:
Nests can be located by searching likely sites on fine days for signs of wasp activity. Flight lines of foraging wasps converging towards or diverging away from nests may be observed in order to pin-point the nests.

Nests ARE only be treated with insecticides were activitiy is found

Wasp’s nests are treated using an insecticide dust, which is applied on to or around the entrance of the nest, from the outside of the building  returning workers will then carry the insecticide further into the nest. There will be increased activity around the nest entrance for at least an hour after treatment. The nest will be completely destroyed within 48/72 hours.

Wasp – Questions and Answers Are wasps hazardous to humans? Yes.
A wasp sting, aside from being very painful can prove serious and sometimes fatal.
If you suspect a reaction to a wasp sting report to your nearest hospital immediately.
Do all wasps sting?
Only the queens and workers possess an ovipositor (egg-laying tube) which forms the stinger, Normally the stinger is used to kill prey on which wasps and their larvae feed, but will use it on animals and humans when provoked.

Do wasps cause damage? No.
Since they feed on flies and other insects they are considered beneficial. However, because they are attracted to sweet substances such as fresh fruit and juice their presence can prove to be a nuisance. When are wasps most common? During summer and early spring when workers are foraging for food. When am I most likely to see wasps? Wasps are most active during the daylight hours. Where do you find wasps? Nests can be found around buildings on verandas, under eaves, ceilings, attics or in trees and shrubs. Several varieties of wasp build nests underground. What are their breeding habits? Do they multiply quickly? The queen (female reproductive) lays all the eggs. Most eggs develop into sterile workers. Late in the season, the queen produces eggs which develop into queens who overwinter will establish nests the following spring. An average of 1,000 to 3,000 eggs are laid per nest which hatch and develop on daily basis. Do wasps die off in cold months? Yes. Only the new queens survive the winter while the rest of the colony dies off when weather becomes cold. The queen overwinters under loose bark or in crevices and lays eggs in the spring to start a new colony. Can weather conditions affect the size of a wasp infestation? Yes. An abnormally cold, wet spring or hot, dry summer can have an effect on the size of a wasp colony. Can I do anything to prevent wasp activity on my property? Yes. Whenever possible try to eliminate fallen fruit and refuse which will attract wasps. Sealing holes and other potential sites may help prevent nesting. Once a nest is established do not seal the hole until after treating and there is no more activity. If I have wasp nests on my property what can be done to eliminate them? Everything you need to know about wasp nests in Manchester homes

The presence of a large number of wasps in your garden can be somewhat unnerving, particularly if you or a family member are known to suffer from anaphylaxis. Even if you don’t experience an extreme reaction from being stung, it’s not a pleasant feeling or something that any of us welcome. Wasps can be erratic though, and greater numbers in the vicinity may suggest that there is a wasp nest close by. Here, Manchester Pest Control answers some of the common questions while emphasising the importance of safe and effective Manchester wasp control solutions.

What does a swarm of wasps look like? The truth is, although there are similarities between bees and wasps, they swarm in different ways, and this should assist with identification. A swarm of honey bees is likely to have a queen at its centre, and the swarm’s objective is to locate a suitable site for a nest. Wasps, on the other hand, will only do something similar to swarming if their existing nesting site has been chemically treated or destroyed, or if something is preventing them from accessing the nest. Otherwise, on occasions where you see many wasps together, it is more likely that they have located a feeding site and are working as a team to forage the food and guard it from wasps belonging to rival nests.

How can I trace a wasp nest? The best way to locate a wasp nest is to observe the activity of wasps and see where they go after they have finished at their feeding site. Wasps are particularly drawn to pollen, which they feed on, and aphids, which they feed their larvae with back at the nest. You may see them fly towards your house, or an outbuilding such as a shed or garage. If there is a hole in the brickwork of your house, they may be using this to access the wall cavity. However, they may also have found a way in around loose roof tiles, which means there could be a nest in your roof space. The number and frequency of wasps arriving and departing the nest increases later in the year as the nest grows in size.

What does a wasp nest look like? There are different varieties of wasps which have different preferences for their nesting sites. For instance, although we have looked so far at problem wasp nests that can be found in people’s properties, the European wasp prefers bushes or trees, and will build a ball-shaped nest that is grey in colour and which expands as the population of the nest grows. Common wasps will nest indoors and outdoors, including underground. If there is sufficient space, the nest of a common wasp will look similar to that of the European wasp, but common wasp nests can vary in shape to accommodate their surroundings, such as tight recesses and cavities.

What about hornets? Hornets are larger than the common wasp, and their nests are similar in appearance but generally contain smaller populations even if the nest might be a decent size. Although hornets are not as aggressive as the common wasp, they will still respond angrily if they feel their nest is under attack, so please be sure to heed the warnings below when it comes to nest removal.

How do wasps choose their nest site? The location of the nest is chosen in the spring by the queen wasp after she wakes from hibernation. Although it might seem convenient to reuse a nest from the previous year, this is not something that wasps do, and they will always begin again from scratch. However, they may build a nest in the vicinity of or adjoining an old nest, which means that properties can be targeted by wasps on successive years if access points remain. Older properties may be more at risk due to greater wear and tear over the years providing numerous ways in, although newer homes can still experience wasp problems too.

How dangerous is a wasp nest? The scale of the danger is very much determined by how many wasps are in the nest and how aggressively they react to your presence if you come close to the nest or attempt to tackle the nest directly yourself, which is something we really do not recommend. Early in the year, the nest may be just starting out, but by mid to late summer, there could be thousands of wasps belonging to just a single nest, and they will defend the nest and their queen if they feel there is a threat. In addition to the dangers for individuals suffering from anaphylaxis, anyone subjected to a large number of stings can suffer a severe allergic response which may be life threatening.

What about DIY pest control for wasps? We’ve already covered some of the dangers, but should add that if you’re considering blocking the entry/exit point to the nest, please think again – this is by no means an effective solution and will only anger the wasps trapped inside and any others that are outside and can no longer get back in. In order to escape, trapped wasps may eat their way through the very structural materials of your home, emerging indoors to pose an even bigger problem. Wasps that cannot get back into their nest are likely to become enraged and sting anyone they encounter in the surrounding neighbourhood. Setting fire to a wasp nest will only result in the same outcome.

How Do you Know if you have a wasps Nest

Often Copied, never matched! eMail:manchesterpest@gmail.com

Wasp nest detection how do YOU know you have a wasps nest

Wasps don’t set out with the sole purpose of making our summers miserable, either from being chased indoors by them or having to nurse the unpleasant (sometimes very serious) stings that they inflict upon us. They are driven solely by the desire to build, feed and protect the nest, although unfortunately their close proximity to humans often results in what can best be described as a ‘clash of personalities’ – we simply get in their way, and their instinct is to respond aggressively when that happens.

At Manchester Pest Control, we are often called on by residents of Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire to dispose of wasp nests that they have found in or close to their properties. Here, we talk you through the nest-building process, and how to locate a nest if you believe there is one concealed nearby which is posing a very real nuisance for you and your family…

Nest origins

When winter gives way to spring, the change in temperature wakes the hibernating queen wasp, who has spent those cold winter months hidden away, but now emerges intent on finding a site for her nest. She looks for a sheltered location, such as a tree, hedge, wall or the eaves of a house, and begins to manufacture the material that will form the very building blocks of the nest. She strips bark from trees, fences and woodpiles, combining it with her saliva to form the nest’s waxy-paper core, cell walls and outer shell.

The cells of the nest are where the queen lays her first eggs, fertilised close to the end of the previous autumn. She then makes it her business to find and bring back to the nest insects with which to feed the first grubs as they hatch. Once these have grown, the queen no longer needs to leave the nest and can focus solely on laying more eggs as she now has a force of worker wasps to forage for her. These workers will provide further building material for the nest and continue to bring food for the next generation of workers.

And so the process continues until, at the height of summer, the once tiny nest is now brimming with wasps numbering in the thousands. Unfortunately, there now comes a problem of supply and demand, as the number of insects on which the wasps typically prey have hugely fallen, and there is a greater likelihood of wasps coming into conflict with people.

Tracking wasps to their nest

If there are a lot of wasps coming and going from your garden, there is likely to be a nest nearby. Watching wasp activity from a safe distance can give you an idea about where they are returning to after their foraging expeditions. It will also give you tell you what is attracting them in the first place: are their certain flowers or shrubs that they are buzzing around, or do you have fruit-bearing trees? If you have been putting rotten apples on a compost heap or leaving the lid of your dustbin ajar, wasps will readily exploit this.

Observing where the wasps go will lead you back to the nest, which may be very obvious when you see it (expect to find something resembling a large, grey-white ball), or it could be concealed out of sight inside a wall, roof space, or underneath the ground even. It might be located inside the roof or wall cavities of your house or garage, in the rafters of your shed, or the eaves of a neighbouring property. If wood on the exterior of a property has become weather-worn and started to rot, wasps may have found a way through.

If wasps have found a way inside your home and the nest is somewhere inside, this may account for any that you keep coming across despite keeping doors and windows closed. If you haven’t been inside your attic recently, or looked it over fully, this may be where the nest is located, although it has been known for nests to turn up in the backs of cupboards and other places homeowners have not had reason to look inside for a while, so we recommend extreme care if you have reason to believe a nest is somewhere under your roof.
