1.Manchester Wasp Control Always ask for a price of how much it costs to deal with a wasp nest OR more than one wasp nest before a treatment is arranged. It has been known (from a minority few) for a “low price” to be quoted over the phone to deal with a wasp or hornets nest and then “built up” when THE COMPANY SENDS THE EMPLOYEE is on site address

2. Be wary if the price quoted seems too cheap ask your self Why. Remember the old adage “buy cheap, pay twice!” how much would it cost to put right if the treatment doesn’t work from an opportunist trader?

3. The cost to deal with your wasp nest is more than likely going to be for dealing with just one wasp nest. If you can see that you have wasps entering your property in several places it is very likely that you have more than one wasp nest. Be sure to have a thorough look around your property and give the pest control company as much information as possible to give you an accurate price.

4. Ask if the pest control company is willing to survey your property to look for other wasp nests (they should do free of charge). It will be a lot cheaper to deal with 2-3 wasp nests at the same time rather than paying for a separate visit in the future.

5. Don’t expect an active wasp nest to be actually “physically removed”. Chemical treatments are normally applied that can take up to 1 to 4 days to be effective.

6. Whilst removal of a dead nest is not necessary, a return visit would normally be required at an additional fee if requested by yourself .

7. For peace of mind check to see if the company can offer any references for similar work carried out or is a member of a scheme like “buy with confidence” or a member of the a Pest Control Association.

8. Ask if there are any guarantee’s if the wasp nest treatment doesn’t work first time. Typically there should be if the job is done right in the first place.

Wasp Stings: everything you need to know

Being stung by a wasp can be a very painful experience. Here you will find a comprehensive guide about wasp stings and how to treat them, courtesy of Manchester Pest Control your local wasp control experts Covering Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.

How dangerous is a wasp sting?

The venom in a wasp sting contains a mix of chemicals which are designed to paralyze their insect prey. However, wasps also use their stingers to defend themselves (see reasons below). If a human being is stung by a wasp (although the same can apply for bees or hornets), the venom is injected into the blood stream, which can lead to different physical responses depending on individual circumstances:

• In most cases, the human body fights back and neutralises the sting. The location of the sting will still be painful for a little while, with a red swelling in that area, although this should clear up within a few days.
• In cases where a person is stung many times, the body may struggle to neutralise the quantity of venom and this could result in the individual feeling very faint, nauseous and in need of medical assistance to help them recover.
• Anaphylactic shock is the most severe reaction to being stung, and can be life-threatening unless the individual receives immediate treatment. A small number of the population do not have the antibodies in their blood to fight the venom from just a single sting, and this results in an allergic response that is outlined in more detail below.

Recognising the symptoms of anaphylactic shock

Unfortunately, where anaphylaxis is concerned, people often do not know that they suffer from it until they are stung. However, the symptoms are very pronounced and can occur very quickly, and it is important to recognise them for what they are. They could be some or all of the following:

• A rash that is red and itchy (and not just isolated to the site of the sting)
• Swollen hands, feet, eyes, lips and limbs in general
• Eyes becoming bloodshot, itchy or sore
• Breathing difficulty (caused by a swollen throat)
• Feeling dizzy or faint (due to reduced blood pressure)
• A peculiar taste in the mouth
• Feeling nauseous or actually being sick
• Experiencing a severe panic attack

If you believe you are experiencing anaphylactic shock, or see the signs in someone else, phone 999 straight away (or get someone to do it for you) as it can only be treated by medical professionals capable of administering injections of antihistamine to combat the venom.

Do wasps carry any diseases?

There are no specific diseases that wasps are known to carry. However, while they are foraging for food, their stingers may come into contact with bacteria on animal faeces or other unclean surfaces they touch. It is therefore possible that a wasp sting may contain bacteria which could infect the site of the sting. However, it is also just as possible for humans to infect a sting site themselves by scratching it, so care should be taken to clean the area of the sting and not to scratch it even if it is very itchy and tempting to do so!

Treatment of wasp stings

As mentioned above, cleaning the site of the sting is the best first step you should take. Unlike bees, wasps do not have a barbed stinger, which is one of the reasons why they can sting multiple times. If you’ve been stung by a bee, the stinger usually gets left behind, which is why bees only sting once and then they die – in such an instance, try to remove the barb as soon as possible as it will otherwise continue to inject venom from the detached venom sac.

There are creams and sprays available in the shops which can help to cleanse and heal stings, so it may be useful to think ahead and buy some of these as a precaution ahead of the summer. Otherwise, the sting can be treated with soap and water, and then the application of an ice pack (e.g., a packet of frozen peas wrapped in a dish cloth) can help to ease the discomfort by cooling the area of the sting.

Reasons why wasps sting

It may sometimes seem like a wasp or group of wasps have specifically targeted you even if you didn’t do anything to make them angry. There can, however, be a number of reasons why they are behaving in this way:

1) Without realising it, you may have disturbed their nest or come close enough to it that they feel the nest is under threat. They will defend the nest aggressively and in large numbers. If you find a wasp nest or believe you have one on your premises anywhere in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire area, contact Manchester Pest Control and we can quickly eliminate the wasp problem for you.
2) As the summer progresses, the number of wasps in a nest can become quite significant in size, which is another reason to stay away from nest sites and contact Pest control Manchester if you find a nest. As the wasp population increases, their insect food supply dwindles, which makes the wasps behave in a slightly drunken manner, and more likely to seek out sugary foods at picnics, barbeques and in our homes.
3) Wasp stings contain pheromones, which are powerful chemicals that enable wasps to leave scent trails for other wasps to follow, but can also communicate danger if a wasp believes it or the nest are under attack. This is why, if you swat a wasp that has entered your home, you may find that more appear in due course!

The best advice we can give if you encounter wasps and they are behaving in an aggressive way is to move away from them as quickly as you can, but without waving your hands in the air to try and ward them off – this will only make them angrier and more likely to sting you. Try to get indoors, or put a good distance between yourself and the wasps so that they lose interest.

Although Manchester Wasp Control can’t treat wasp stings, we can treat wasp nests, and we do so promptly, at a reasonable price, and with fast effects (usually the nest will cease to be a problem within 24 hours) so that you and your family and friends can get back to enjoying the summertime with less risk of being stung.

We’re here to help, throughout Manchester, Stockport, and Cheshire with wasp nest problems.

Wasps: the facts
Encounters with wasps Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire
during the spring and summer months have become almost unavoidable. Here, Pest Control Manchester, shares some useful information about wasps, their life cycles, feeding habits, and what you should do if you or someone you know are stung by a wasp. For wasp control measures or wasp nest treatment, call Manchester Pest Control on 0161 448 1782.Treatment £59.50
Wasp nests
1. Wasps’ nests contain different types of wasp which each have different functions. The queen lays eggs which hatch into workers, whose job it is to scout for food, defend the nest, and make it bigger as the colony grows. By late summer, a single wasps’ nest may house in the region of 10,000 wasps

2. At this stage, the queen will lay eggs containing young queens and male drones, whose sole task is to mate with a queen. Having performed this function, the drones then die.

3. When winter comes, the population of the nest dies out, with the exception of the young queens, who will find a safe place to hibernate until they are awoken by the warmer weather in the spring. The queens will then find a suitable place to build a nest, lay their first eggs, and the cycle begins again.

4. When building her nest, the queen strips wood from nearby sources such as trees, fence panels and the walls of garden sheds. She chews the wood into a pulp, creating the material that will form the basis of the nest. European hornets, which are much larger than your average wasp, can do a large amount of damage in the process.

5. Wasps are active during the daytime, but return to their nests at night. If you are aware of a nest’s location and think this might be a good time to try and move or treat it, think again – they will still emerge to defend it if they need to.

Wasp feeding habits

6. Wasps live off nectar and insects, particularly aphids, which is why wasps can be found on plants in people’s gardens. Aphids are very sweet tasting, and when supplies run low from August onwards, this is why wasps are drawn to sugary foods, fruit and meat, becoming an increasing threat and nuisance in our kitchens, and at picnics and barbeques.

7. Wasps will also eat caterpillars, and therefore have some benefit to Cheshire’s farmers and keen gardeners, whose plants or crops may suffer severe damage if caterpillars were not naturally culled in this way.

8. Wasps do not swarm in the same way that bees do, and may only appear to swarm when they are collecting food in large numbers.

9. The bright yellow stripes of a wasp serve the purpose of putting off potential predators, but this does not deter certain birds, mammals, and reptiles even if there is the risk of being stung.

Wasp stings
10. Wasps are known for their aggression, particularly if they feel that they or their nest are under attack. There is a pheromone present in their venom which can incite aggression in other wasps, and can result in them attacking in large numbers. Swatting and killing a wasp may result in the release of this pheromone, so be prepared that other wasps might arrive on the scene soon afterwards.

11. A sting from a wasp can be painful, although in most cases it will prove harmless. However, it can be sore and itchy while inflamed, and scratching the affected area may cause an infection. The NHS advises that stings should be cleansed with soap and water, and that a cold compress will also help to reduce the swelling. A lump should then form, which will heal after a few days.

12. Multiple wasp stings, or stings on sensitive areas of the body such as the face and neck, may require medical attention.

13. Some people may go into anaphylactic shock when stung by a wasp. This is a very serious, fast-occurring reaction which can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms may include feeling faint or nauseous, or passing out completely. The venom may also cause muscles to swell not just in the location of the sting but elsewhere on the body, including the face and neck, and is likely to affect or impede breathing.

14. If you or someone close to you experiences a severe reaction to a wasp sting as described above, call hospital immediately.

Manchester Pest Control’s trained technicians have many years’ experience providing wasp control and treatment of wasps’ nests throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. If you find a wasp nest, consider the dangers outlined above, and then contact Manchester Pest Control for a safe, effective and reasonably priced wasp treatment solution.

Manchester Wasp Control Q&A: Wasps
At Manchester Pest Control, we get many call-outs each year to help with wasp problems throughout Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. These requests for help usually come in the spring and summer months, when wasps are most active. Sometimes, home and business owners try to deal with the problem themselves, but this can be very dangerous. This Q&A therefore provides some useful information about wasps, and also covers some of the dos and don’ts where wasps and their nests are concerned.

When do wasps build their nests?
Wasps have an annual life-cycle that begins with the queen wasp waking from hibernation in the early spring. She will have been born late the previous summer and while normal worker wasps died out come the winter months, the queen has hidden herself away and slept until the warmer spring climate awakened her. Her immediate priority upon waking will be to find a suitable location for a new nest.

Where do wasps build their nests?
Like any animal (or insect, in this case) wasps want to build a home that is safe from the elements and predators. The houses of Manchester and surrounding areas therefore provide this in abundance, whether it’s a sheltered porch, roof eaves, accessible external wall or attic space; or close by in a shed, tree, old stone wall, compost heap, timber pile or even in the ground itself.

What does a wasps’ nest look like?
The nest will start off quite small when the queen first builds it. She will strip wood from trees, fence panels or the side of a garden shed, and chew it to make a pulp which becomes papery in texture when it hardens. The nest may be not much bigger than a tennis ball to begin with, so can be difficult to spot. However, the queen’s first batch of eggs will soon hatch into workers, who will enlarge the nest and bring food to it while the queen remains inside, laying more eggs all through the spring and summer. A nest may be as large as a beach ball be the end of the summer, with a population numbering in the thousands. It is usually grey-white in colour.

How can I locate a wasps’ nest?
Unless you find a nest by accident, it is more likely that you will first notice increased wasp activity in a certain location, such as a flowerbed, where wasps have found a supply of aphids to feed on. If you observe the wasps’ comings and goings, you will see where they return to, and may be surprised by the size of the nest you find! If the nest is inside a wall-space, it will be difficult to gauge the exact size of it. Either way, be very careful how close you get, as wasps will fiercely defend their nest if they think it is under threat.

Do wasps re-use nests from previous years?
Once the previous occupants of a nest have died out, it will remain empty. New queens prefer to start their own nests from scratch, although they might still build a nest close by a previous one if the location is good for it. So if you have found a nest in a certain place in previous years, be prepared that conditions could be right (as far as the wasps are concerned!) for another to be built nearby – and be sure to keep an eye out from early spring onwards. If you’ve found nests inside your walls or attic in the past, we advise you seal off possible access points during the winter.

How dangerous is a wasps’ nest?
If you or a person you know suffers from anaphylaxis, just a single sting from a wasp will require urgent medical attention as anaphylactic shock can be life threatening if it is not treated. That said, people who do not have anaphylaxis may require assistance if they disturb a nest and are stung multiple times, which is a painful experience for anyone.

Can wasps swarm?
It may seem like it, if you disturb their nest, but they don’t swarm like honey bees, who can sometimes be observed flying in thick clusters. Honey bees will tend to swarm around the queen in the centre, and are therefore most likely to swarm if they have been forced to leave their hive or nest. If a queen honey bee lands somewhere on your property or in your garden, you will observe swarming behaviour as the rest of the bees gather around her. The closest wasps come to swarming is if they are defending their nest, unable to access it, or gathering food in a group.

Is it possible to seal wasps inside their nest?
Blocking the entrance to a wasps’ nest is definitely NOT something we at Manchester Pest Control recommend doing. By preventing wasps from accessing their nest, you will merely end up with a lot of angry wasps both inside the nest and out. And this is even assuming you can get close enough to the nest to seal it in the first place without being attacked. It really won’t solve the problem, as the wasps will simply find a new way in or out, which may result in a much bigger problem if they happen to be occupying wall-space and burst through into your home!

Should I set fire to a wasps’ nest?
Again, NO. This isn’t a sensible solution. Setting a fire might kill a small percentage of the wasps, but the rest are likely to escape the fire and be enraged by the destruction of their home. With no home to go to, they will sting everyone in the vicinity, which won’t make you very popular with your family or neighbours.

I live in Stockport – Will the council treat the wasp nest for me?
In some parts of Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire, this is an option – but you might find yourself waiting anything up to a month as it is not something that the council will give priority to. The council may also contract the job out to a private company in any case, so you could find yourself paying a higher fee than necessary if you haven’t been given the chance to shop around.
Manchester Pest Control can be with you within 24 hours of your call, which means that the wasp problem is quickly dealt with rather than continuing to grow while you wait. And it’s all done safely and at a competitive price, so for your Manchester wasp removal needs, give Manchester Pest Control a call and we’ll get rid of wasps and their nests, and you can get on with enjoying your typical British summer! www.manchesterpestcontrol.co.uk 0161 448 1782

Mouse Pest Control

Mice – Mouse infestations in homes are more than an inconvenience. A mouse infestation can pose a serious health risk especially in kitchens where they contaminate food and preparation areas with their faeces and urine. Mice thrive in a variety of conditions and they can inflict a lot of damage to your household furniture and clothes, contaminate your food and even cause electrical fires. Mice carry a host of different parasites and they can transmit diseases such as Salmonella and Typhus to humans in Manchester, Stockport, Warrington and Cheshire.

Common signs of a mouse problem:

Often mice in the home will go undetected for a long time. You may never see a live mouse, even if you have a serious mouse infestation. However, there are other common signs of mice or mouse infestations that you can look out for.

Mice make a distinctive noise when they are scurrying around. You are most likely to hear them scratching in walls and the ceiling. Along with the noise, they will also leave droppings as they go about their business of destroying your home. These are small and dark and a definite sign of a mice infestation. There may also be a strong musky smell in your home which is caused by the urine of the mice. This is strongest in enclosed places where they nest and breed.

If you see any of these signs; you need to call in a professional pest control company right away. Mice – Mouse infestations can take hold in your home in no time at all so it is important to deal with the problem as soon as you become aware of it, so that you can protect your health and home.

How to eradicate a mouse infestation:

Established mice colonies are very hard to get rid of and calling in a professional pest control company such as Manchester Pest Control is recommended. Manchester Pest Control can provide a highly targeted treatment plan for any mouse problem in the Manchester, Stockport, Cheshire andWarrington area. The highly trained technicians will also be able to give you valuable advice on how to stop these pests from re-entering your home.

While there are many DIY products on the market, these may capture or kill a few of the mice, but they can never deal with the problem holistically. Mice are prolific breeders so catching or killing a few of them will not make a huge difference to the infestation. Frankly, partly effective DIY methods are only going to delay the effective treatment of the infestation, giving the mice more time to breed. Hence, calling out a pest control company such as Manchester Pest Control timeously is extremely important.

Getting rid of mice is a special form of pest control and can only be done effectively by trained, experienced pest control specialists. Manchester Pest Control technicians will find out where the mice are hiding and breeding and how they are getting into your home. From this information, they will tailor make a mice control treatment plan for you. Manchester Pest Control specialists are trained and experienced in detecting mice and removing them quickly and effectively. Eradicating all activity and keeping your family safe from potential hazards is what Manchester Pest Control can do for you.
