The wasp is generally the most abundant and disliked of all British insects. The most common of these are the German Wasp and the Common Wasp. Their bodies have the characteristic black and yellow band across the abdomen. They are fairly large insects approximately 14mm in length. Wasps and Hornets look very similar in colour, although the hornet is much larger in size. Hornets and wasp are extremely aggressive and will string without provocation. A wasps nest can be a problem to the householder or business. Wasps are a nuisance to many people, therefore wasp treatment is essential.
The sting is caused by an injection of venom into the victim. Unlike the sting of a bee, the wasp sting can be withdrawn from the victim and used again, wasps can be extremely aggressive. A wasp can sting multiple times which can cause anaphylactic shock to the victim. In extreme cases a hospital visit may be needed, if stung by a wasp multiple times.
Wasp nests should be approached with extreme caution. Multiple stings can be very dangerous. Wasps have a very powerful sting and readily use it to defend the nest or themselves. Unlike bees, which are quite passive, wasps can be very aggressive.
No matter how big or small the wasp or hornet nest may be, wasp control Manchester is able to treat your wasp problem. Wasp nests may be found in roof spaces, wall cavities and air grates of buildings, hanging from trees as well as underground, wasps are extremely common in the UK.

Insect pest control Manchester Stockport Cheshire
As insects are smaller than rats, mice and birds, it is much easier for them to find their way inside home and business properties by a variety of means such as cracks, airbricks, open windows, gaps between roof tiles, or even hitching a lift inside furniture or on clothing. It is also possible for their presence to go undetected for quite some time, meaning that you can have an infestation on your hands before you know it!
At Manchester Pest Control we have dealt with many kinds of insect infestations in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. Depending on the type of insect we are dealing with, there are different factors to consider in terms of risks to health and the extent of the damage they can cause. Here we’ll provide profiles on five different types of invasive insect, and outline what we can do to eliminate them fully from your property.
1. Ants
In the UK, ants are not considered amongst the most harmful of insects as they are not known carriers of any contagious diseases. However, it is not recommended that you consume food contaminated by ants. If you own a catering establishment, customers will view the presence of ants as a sign of poor hygiene standards. Some species of ants have been known to bite, which could be a more serious problem if someone disturbs a nest and is bitten by many ants at the same time. Severe allergic reactions are discussed further in the section on wasps below.
An ant colony may have a population in the thousands, though this consists primarily of worker ants whose job it is to forage for food. If a single worker ant finds an available food source, it will soon call in reinforcements to help bring the food back to the nest. If you find a trail of ants, you should be able to follow it back to an entrance to the nest. As the nest is likely to be buried out of sight, you will find it difficult to gauge the size and extent of it. Trying to seal the entrance shut is a fruitless task as the ants will dig another way in somewhere else. Pouring water into an ants’ nest will also have minimal effect as it is likely to disperse in the ground, just like rainwater does.
The most effective way of destroying an ants’ nest is with industry-recognised chemicals and equipment in the hands of a professional pest control technician. Manchester Pest Control provides a service which includes initial assessment to gauge the extent of the infestation, identify the species of ant (e.g. garden, Pharaoh’s, ghost), and then apply the appropriate solution, with a follow-up service if required.
2. Bed bugs
Despite the name, bed bugs cannot just be found in beds or bedrooms, and can quickly spread throughout furniture, carpets, and rooms of the home. In a block of flats, an infestation in one flat may spill over into neighbouring flats in very little time at all. If you stay at a hotel or B&B where bed bugs are a problem, they may hitch a lift in your suitcase or on your clothing, leading to you unwittingly bringing them into your home. The same goes for certain items of second-hand furniture that you might purchase if bed begs have already set up home there.
Signs that you may have a bed bug infestation are if you or other family members are being bitten in your sleep. Unlike mosquitoes, bed bug bites tend to form a straight line. Some people may react worse to the bites than others, as they can cause itchiness and inflammation, with the possibility of blood contamination as a result of scratching. Bed bugs are very small, barely half a centimetre in length, and tend to hide when the lights are on, but you may notice blood patches on your sheets if you have crushed any in your sleep; although they also will stain sheets with their darker faeces, which has a very sweet and unpleasant odour.
The market for bed bug pesticides is constantly having to keep up with the speed at which new populations of bed bug become immune, which means that many shop-bought solutions won’t do the job properly. At Manchester Pest Control we come equipped with steaming equipment which we combine with the latest chemical developments to ensure bed bugs are eradicated without any danger to your health. We will make several visits to your property, as bed bugs can take several doses of treatment before we can be sure they have been eliminated altogether.
If you own a hotel or B&B in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire, and have noticed signs of bed bug activity, contact Manchester Pest Control as soon as possible to avoid damage to your reputation.
3. Cockroaches
So far, the insects we have mentioned are more likely to cause irritation or discomfort rather than serious illness, but the presence of cockroaches in your business or home brings a whole new level of concern. Businesses in particular should pay close attention to what we have to say here, as a cockroach infestation can be grounds for business closure, huge fines, lawsuits brought by customers, and total loss of reputation.
The reason why these insects should not be ignored is because they are carriers of serious diseases and bacterial infections such as gastroenteritis, typhoid, salmonella, dysentery and diarrhoea. They are also very hardy, with some scientific studies suggesting they might be the only survivors if there was a nuclear war! There are many species of cockroach (e.g. American, German, Asian), although they are generally around an inch long with reddish-brown carapaces/shells and probing antennae. If you see one on its own, don’t be deceived as there are likely to be many more hiding out of sight.
Cockroaches prefer dark and dingy conditions and it is rare to see them in daylight. They can be found in sewer pipes and drains, but once they have gained access to your property, they will hide and lay large clutches of eggs in narrow, difficult to reach places, particularly if there is a heat source nearby. They will contaminate food in kitchens, as well as any surface they scurry across. They will also eat a variety of materials, from paper to leather, and secrete a sickly-smelling faeces which might be one of the things that draws them to your attention.
As with bed bugs, Manchester Pest Control can provide a thorough cockroach extermination service which it would just not be possible for businesses to do on their own. We know how difficult it can be to locate the hiding places of cockroaches, let alone be certain the chemicals you are applying will do the trick. So let us bring the benefit of our experience, and we promise also to be discrete in our unmarked vans that will not draw unwelcome attention to your business while we rectify the problem for you. Call Manchester Pest Control on 0161 448 1782 today or visit us at www.manchesterpestcontrol.co.uk
4. Flies
Flies don’t tend to hide themselves away like bed bugs and cockroaches do. There have probably been many occasions when you have had to swat one away because it’s been buzzing round your head or trying to land on your plate of food. As well as being extremely annoying, flies can transmit bacteria (of diseases such as salmonella, cholera, tuberculosis and typhoid) onto food and other surfaces they land on. When they land on food, they will vomit on it in order to make it more digestible for them, and they may also lay eggs which then hatch out as maggots.
There are many different types of fly, with the housefly being one of the most common nuisances. Horse flies can give a nasty bite which may result in a rash or swelling, sometimes attacking the body’s nervous system. Proximity to water sources may result in a large number of flies hatching out during the warmer months of the year. They are drawn to places where food is readily available, whether it’s freshly prepared or in bins that have not been sealed properly. They will also dine on the faeces of animals such as dogs, horses and cattle, which is another reason why you don’t want them landing on your dinner plate afterwards!
If you encounter a large number of flies in your home or business place, it is possible that you have an infestation, or it might just be that you need to tighten up your properties defences to stop them getting through. Either way, Manchester Pest Control can help by investigating the cause and taking steps to deal with it, saving you the stress and bother of having to chase after every fly that enters your kitchen, dining room or restaurant premises. Manchester Pest Control will fit screens that can keep flies out, apply insecticide solutions to affected areas, install and maintain fly deterrent equipment, and we’re also happy to offer practical advice as well.
5. Wasps
Our final insect has a sting in the tail. The common wasp may commence its life cycle each year with just a single queen waking from hibernation and building a nest, but by the end of the summer, that nest will be a whole lot bigger and can contain a population in the thousands. As the population of the nest increases, the insect population that wasps feed off begins to decline, making wasps more likely to target sweet food sources in kitchens, at picnics or barbeques.
Wasps can be highly aggressive, particularly if they feel their nest is threatened. Unless you find a nest early in the spring and it is small enough to remove or destroy without serious risk to yourself or others, we advise you keep away and phone in the experts. Being stung by just one wasp on its own can be unpleasant, but a whole nest-load will be an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. Some people may also suffer allergic reactions to wasp stings, with anaphylactic shock being the most life-threatening – if you witness someone suffering a severe reaction after being stung (e.g. swollen limbs, difficulty breathing, faintness, nausea) call 999 as soon as you can.
If you either know the location of a nest, or believe there is one close by, contact Manchester Pest Control and we can carry out an exploratory investigation to determine the exact location and size of the nest (if it is adjoining a wall cavity, much of it might be out of view), and the best method for disposing of it at minimal risk to people in the vicinity. Unlike members of the public, we have protective clothing and industry-available pesticides which help us to do the job effectively and without being stung in the process. We do advise that a treated nest is left for at least 24 hours before removal, to ensure all wasps have time to return to the nest and be exposed to the pesticides within.
Your local pest control provider
Manchester Pest Control’s services are available both to businesses and homes in Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire. We can deal with your insect infestation quickly and discretely so that you needn’t worry.
If you do try and deal with an infestation yourself, you may find it an uphill struggle as many of the DIY solution available to the public are not sufficiently effective, and some can be quite hazardous to health. Unless you can be sure of where all nests and eggs are located, an infestation can quickly return time and time again. And the worst thing you can do is nothing at all, as infestations don’t tend to disappear overnight – wasps can still do a lot of damage to a building’s infrastructure over the summer months if they get inside walls or ceiling space; and an infestation by one sort of insect may lead to infestation by other pests if it makes entry to your property easier and more appealing.
For a service that won’t break the bank but which will keep business and personal reputations intact, contact Manchester Pest Control for a quote on 0161 448 1782. Our service also covers a wide variety of other insect pests including moths, fleas and lice.

The difference between wasps and hornets
You may have heard of hornets but not be sure what the difference is between a hornet and the common wasp in Manchester Stockport and cheshire For a start, hornets are generally seen more across the rest of Europe, although they have been known to show up in the UK, but in far smaller numbers than the wasp population. Here in this blog, Manchester Pest Control, your local wasp and hornet removal experts in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire region, outlines the key differences so that you will have a better idea of what you are dealing with and the most effective means of treatment. Contact Manchester Pest Control 0161 448 1782 or visit www.manchesterpestcontrol.co.uk
Wasps and hornets – main differences
1) Wasps are smaller than hornets. A wasp might be anything up to two centimetres in length, while hornets can grow to double the size.
2) Wasps have a distinctive black and yellow colouring, whereas hornets have a pattern that is more of a mix of yellow and reddish-brown. Hornets also have a larger head and eyes.
3) Hornets live off insects such as grasshoppers and different varieties of flies, while wasps feed on smaller insects such as greenfly and their larvae. Hornets are also not attracted to the food we eat, while wasps can ruin an outdoor meal if they smell sweet, sugary food that they want to eat when greenfly are in short supply.
4) Wasps are more aggressive than hornets and may be more likely to attack even if unprovoked. Hornets on the other hand tend to attack only if they feel that their nest is under threat. In addition to stinging, hornets may also bite as a form of attack.
5) Wasp activity tends to decline later in the day, whereas hornets may continue to explore for food while the sun is starting to set. Rather like moths, hornets can become confused by and drawn to bright lights at this time of the day.
6) A wasps nest can contain a population of thousands, whereas a hornets nest might peak somewhere in the region of 6-700.
Wasps and hornets – similarities
1) There are similarities in the way that wasps and hornets go about constructing their nests. They will strip bark from trees, fences, and other wood sources outdoors, and chew on it to break it down into building a papery kind of nest material. Hornets also feed on the sap from certain bushes and trees such as lilac, rhododendrons, and ash, doing quite a lot of damage to the plants in the process of getting to the sap.
2) The locations wasps and hornets choose for their nests are very similar. Outdoors, the cavity of a tree might provide good shelter for a nest, but both species have also been known to make their nests on the outside of houses, or even in lofts or wall cavities where access is available. Nests have also been found inside bird boxes, and on the walls or ceilings of garages, summerhouses and sheds.
3) Being stung by a wasp or a hornet is equally painful and in either instance there is a low risk of the sting causing anaphylactic shock. This is a life threatening condition and you should phone for an ambulance immediately – we outline the symptoms in several other blog posts on this site. Treatment advice for non-life-threatening stings is also available on the Manchester Pest Control blog.
4) Wasps and hornets are equally dangerous when it comes to protecting their nests, and can inflict a lot of harm if they sting in large numbers. If you discover the location of a nest, do not approach it unless it is very early in the spring and the nest is not much larger than a golf ball, which means that the population should be fairly small at this stage. Even so, think twice before taking any risks, particularly if the nest is located somewhere that it is difficult to judge the true size of it.
As a professional firm dealing with the treatment and removal of wasp and hornet nests, Manchester Pest Control applies similar types of treatment when dealing with both kinds of pest. We review the location of the nest, factoring in anything unique about the environment, and we treat it with an insecticide solution that gets to work eliminating the wasps or hornets inside. We don’t take any unnecessary risks, and we wear protective clothing that we know will prevent us from being stung. The insecticide gets to work quickly on the population of the nest and is effective for some time afterwards, ensuring it will also infect any wasps or hornets that were away from the nest when it was treated but which return in the next 24-48 hours. We can also dispose of the nest for you after an appropriate number of days have passed.
Please feel welcome to call Manchester Pest Control for information about our rates. We work across Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire and will respond quickly and professionally to all requests for assistance.

Everything you need to know about wasp nests in Manchester homes
The presence of a large number of wasps in your garden can be somewhat unnerving, particularly if you or a family member are known to suffer from anaphylaxis. Even if you don’t experience an extreme reaction from being stung, it’s not a pleasant feeling or something that any of us welcome. Wasps can be erratic though, and greater numbers in the vicinity may suggest that there is a wasp nest close by. Here, Manchester Pest Control answers some of the common questions while emphasising the importance of safe and effective Manchester wasp control solutions.
What does a swarm of wasps look like? The truth is, although there are similarities between bees and wasps, they swarm in different ways, and this should assist with identification. A swarm of honey bees is likely to have a queen at its centre, and the swarm’s objective is to locate a suitable site for a nest. Wasps, on the other hand, will only do something similar to swarming if their existing nesting site has been chemically treated or destroyed, or if something is preventing them from accessing the nest. Otherwise, on occasions where you see many wasps together, it is more likely that they have located a feeding site and are working as a team to forage the food and guard it from wasps belonging to rival nests.
How can I trace a wasp nest? The best way to locate a wasp nest is to observe the activity of wasps and see where they go after they have finished at their feeding site. Wasps are particularly drawn to pollen, which they feed on, and aphids, which they feed their larvae with back at the nest. You may see them fly towards your house, or an outbuilding such as a shed or garage. If there is a hole in the brickwork of your house, they may be using this to access the wall cavity. However, they may also have found a way in around loose roof tiles, which means there could be a nest in your roof space. The number and frequency of wasps arriving and departing the nest increases later in the year as the nest grows in size.
What does a wasp nest look like? There are different varieties of wasps which have different preferences for their nesting sites. For instance, although we have looked so far at problem wasp nests that can be found in people’s properties, the European wasp prefers bushes or trees, and will build a ball-shaped nest that is grey in colour and which expands as the population of the nest grows. Common wasps will nest indoors and outdoors, including underground. If there is sufficient space, the nest of a common wasp will look similar to that of the European wasp, but common wasp nests can vary in shape to accommodate their surroundings, such as tight recesses and cavities.
What about hornets? Hornets are larger than the common wasp, and their nests are similar in appearance but generally contain smaller populations even if the nest might be a decent size. Although hornets are not as aggressive as the common wasp, they will still respond angrily if they feel their nest is under attack, so please be sure to heed the warnings below when it comes to nest removal.
How do wasps choose their nest site? The location of the nest is chosen in the spring by the queen wasp after she wakes from hibernation. Although it might seem convenient to reuse a nest from the previous year, this is not something that wasps do, and they will always begin again from scratch. However, they may build a nest in the vicinity of or adjoining an old nest, which means that properties can be targeted by wasps on successive years if access points remain. Older properties may be more at risk due to greater wear and tear over the years providing numerous ways in, although newer homes can still experience wasp problems too.
How dangerous is a wasp nest? The scale of the danger is very much determined by how many wasps are in the nest and how aggressively they react to your presence if you come close to the nest or attempt to tackle the nest directly yourself, which is something we really do not recommend. Early in the year, the nest may be just starting out, but by mid to late summer, there could be thousands of wasps belonging to just a single nest, and they will defend the nest and their queen if they feel there is a threat. In addition to the dangers for individuals suffering from anaphylaxis, anyone subjected to a large number of stings can suffer a severe allergic response which may be life threatening.
What about DIY pest control for wasps? We’ve already covered some of the dangers, but should add that if you’re considering blocking the entry/exit point to the nest, please think again – this is by no means an effective solution and will only anger the wasps trapped inside and any others that are outside and can no longer get back in. In order to escape, trapped wasps may eat their way through the very structural materials of your home, emerging indoors to pose an even bigger problem. Wasps that cannot get back into their nest are likely to become enraged and sting anyone they encounter in the surrounding neighbourhood. Setting fire to a wasp nest will only result in the same outcome.
