Mouse in the house in Manchester? Mice in the Workplace? Manchester pest control are experts in dealing with mice

While an unwanted mouse population may spiral out of control, our costs for extermination won’t. If you become infested with mice, we offer a fixed cost service, as we know how invasive vermin can be.

Whether you are a business or a home owner, we never charge for site surveys. To maximise the advantage in the battle against your furry pests,  we still aim for a fast, efficient 24 hour service for pest control treatment to fully commence.

Particularly with businesses and the potential variations in size and environment, we will always carry out on site to assess the scale and particulars of the infestation, to ensure we can tackle the situation effectively with minimal disruption to your day to day routine. We will clarify numbers and locations of the mice, leaving you to earn a living!

We have summarized details of this service below but don’t hesitate to call us on 0161 448 1782 for clarification of any aspects, whether it’s cost or technical details, one of our professional specialists will discuss the process in full.

What happens during the treatment process?

A light to medium infestation can usually be remedied with a few visits carried out over a 3-4 week period.

Mouse bait boxes will be placed at strategic locations throughout the premises, each containing a rodenticide which is fatal to mice. Don’t worry as all boxes are locked by key and can’t be crushed either – they are specially designed so small children and most pets can’t access the contents in any way.  Stations can be placed discreetly such as under fixtures and fittings or behind furniture, inside cupboards and so on.  In larger commercial premises they can also be placed in basements or electrical cupboards, boiler rooms or even below raised floors.

For subsequent visits, the technician will assess station locations for effectiveness, and moving them if needed, as well as checking every station and refreshing the contents, safely removing any visible waste elements created by the process.

They will also carry out, as part of the standard service should you require the service  at a Extra cost, basic mouse proofing like blocking gaps around skirting boards or pipes. Furthermore the technician will look at housekeeping or hygiene arrangements that may be impacting on the situation, suggesting improvements if appropriate.

Please note, any food preparation areas, equipment or surfaces MUST be hot washed immediately before use, if mice are suspected. Bacteria from their urine can cause illness so stored food should be checked for signs of mouse activity regularly and disinfecting wiping carried out to control bacteria transfer.

House Mouse: Summary facts

The house mouse has a unique musky smell which can be the first indicator they are nearby, but they can be easily recognised by their large ears and eyes set in a relatively small head, and a long tail (as long as rest of the body and head put together).They can sometimes be confused for young brown rats but they will have small ears/eyes. House mice tend to be the same colour all over – normally brown or light grey, but fur colour does vary and can even appear very dark. Whilst mainly active at night, they can be seen during the day, especially if they are feeding a litter or are well established in the environment and food supplies are under pressure. Their agility is impressive – a house mouse can run up vertical surfaces with minimal texture, and along horizontal cables. A true acrobat and can jump from the floor onto a flat surface. In fact they can jump 30 cm straight into the air (in human terms, jump onto the roof of a house!).  Down isn’t a problem either as a mouse can jump down twelve foot safely (a human jumping off a ten storey building without injury).  So where do they get the energy from?

Mice will eat anything, but anything of a seed-like or grain natures are particular favourites, along with sweet items which smell particularly tasty. A fully grown mouse needs a minimum of 3g of food and 3ml of water to survive, and even with a full tummy an adult mouse will only weigh around 30 grams. Given a plentiful supply of food they will still forage and hide extra for future sustenance. Most of their water comes from the food itself so even with water supply cut off, mice are adept at survival.  Did you know a mouse can even go for a longer time without drinking than camels?  However, it does mean their bladders are poorly trained, so droplets of urine will be all around areas the mice inhabit.

What goes in must come out – found shiny black grains of rice lying about? These are recent faeces of a house mouse!  If these small grains of rice are dull black, the good news is the droppings are older in origin.

Mice typically gnaw small, clean holes about 3-4 centimetres in diameter, however if a biro pen can fit in a hole so can a house mouse! While they can nest outside in ground burrows or general rubbish, they use soft materials for their nests such as insulation, furniture stuffing or paper.  Common sites for nests include inside furniture or appliances, drawers or boxes, even inside ceiling voids or cavity walls.

Nice comfortable nests, and a food supply, are perfect breeding grounds, and it’s no surprise mice numbers multiply exponentially. A mouse can have as many as 8 litters in a year, with anything from 4 to 16 young in each.  Factor in each new born mouse becomes sexually mature by the time it is 12 weeks old, and you can understand why prompt action is crucial to get your unwanted furry visitors under control.

If you see a mouse, call us out, as there are likely to be many more mice you can’t see in the building.

Mice Pest Control

Mice – Mouse infestations in homes are more than an inconvenience. Mice carry a host of different parasites and they can transmit diseases such as Salmonella and Typhus to humans in Manchester, Stockport, Warrington and Cheshire.

Common signs of a mouse problem:

Often mice in the home will go undetected for a long time. You may never see a live mouse, even if you have a serious mouse infestation. However, there are other common signs of mice or mouse infestations that you can look out for.

Mice make a distinctive noise when they are scurrying around. You are most likely to hear them scratching in walls and the ceiling. Along with the noise, they will also leave droppings as they go about their business of destroying your home. These are small and dark and a definite sign of a mice infestation. There may also be a strong musky smell in your home which is caused by the urine of the mice. This is strongest in enclosed places where they nest and breed.

If you see any of these signs; you need to call in a professional pest control company right away. Mice – Mouse infestations can take hold in your home in no time at all so it is important to deal with the problem as soon as you become aware of it, so that you can protect your health and home.

Manchester Pest Control can provide a highly targeted treatment plan for any mouse problem in the Manchester, Stockport, Cheshire area. The highly trained technicians will also be able to give you valuable advice on how to stop these pests from re-entering your home.

Hotels, B & B, and Guesthouses

Pest Control for Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, and Guesthouses

Are you an owner or manager in the hospitality sector in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire? If you are, you will no doubt be aware of the reputational risks that your business may struggle to recover from if health concerns are raised by guests or the Environmental Health Officer. Here, Manchester Pest Control outlines the areas of your business under threat from a variety of common pests, including but certainly not limited to mice, cockroaches, and bed bugs.

Guest rooms

As we’ve mentioned elsewhere in our blogs, bed bugs are not a sign of a untidy property – but they’re certainly not something that paying guests will welcome if they wake up covered in bites. Ironically, bed bugs are likely to be brought into your hotel by guests themselves! This is due to the constant turnover of visitors passing through from all manner of locations, and bed bugs taking the opportunity to hitch a ride in their suitcases and other belongings.

Bed bugs do not limit their activity to beds alone, and can be found in carpets and other furnishings. The females lay large numbers of eggs which hatch within a very short timeframe, and the growing number of bed bugs can rapidly spread from a single guest room into the corridors and rooms beyond, leading to a full-scale infestation. Manchester Pest Control will of course handle such matters – big or small – discretely, and we can also offer advice to you and your staff that will help identify a bed bug problem in its earliest stages.

Food preparation and serving

With the kitchens working overtime to cater to your guests, it can sometimes be possible for staff to overlook certain precautionary measures that would prevent or discourage pests. Instead, in the hub of activity, doors and windows might be frequently left open, food waste is not properly tidied up or disposed of, and work surfaces and floors may be given only a cursory clean. Is all food stored in air-tight containers and do staff clean down the back of or between units if there are spillages?

Clearly, you should have a policy in place that all staff are aware of and are expected to abide by, and they should be made aware of the implications if they don’t follow the policy to the letter. Kitchens are at risk from rats and mice, which also bring with them various parasites and diseases that can make people very ill. The same applies to insects such as cockroaches and flies. And if staff think it’s acceptable to take the risk, tell them to picture the consequences the moment any of these pests are seen by a visitor to your hotel!

At the first sign of any rodent or insect activity in your kitchen or restaurant, give Manchester Pest Control a call and we’ll be right round to deal with it. Even if only one mouse or cockroach is spotted, there could be many more hiding out of sight, and we have the tools and the knowledge that will ensure these are targeted and do not pose a future problem for you.

Access all areas

It is not just the areas where guests dine and sleep that need to be kept free of unwanted visitors. The structure and grounds of your hotel should also be checked regularly and kept in good shape in order to deter pests from getting in. Above ground level, there is the risk of birds, squirrels and flying insects accessing roof space if your roof is not in the best shape from cumulative wear-and-tear or storm damage. Once in, squirrels can eat their way through vital beams and wiring (even sparking electrical fires!), and a dead pigeon in a water tank is a sure-fire way of polluting the hotel’s water supply.

Manchester Pest Control can help to rid you of any pigeons or grey squirrels in your hotel’s roof space, although please note that if you find red squirrels or bats, these are protected species and you should familiarise yourself with UK law where these are concerned. We can also deal with or put in place preventative measures for rats, mice, ants and wasps in your garden as well as installing bird and squirrel-proof mesh, pigeon spiking (not harmful, but a good deterrent) and offering advice to help you and your staff more readily identify risks sooner.

Working with your local pest control experts

Please feel welcome to call Manchester Pest Control today, even if you have no visible evidence of a pest problem – it’s better to run a routine check every now and then to be on the safe side, and we’re best placed to do this as we know the kind of things to look out for that other people might miss. We offer a reasonable rate for this, and for our pest proofing services.

Together, working in partnership with hotels, bed & breakfasts, and guesthouses, Manchester Pest Control can help to significantly reduce the risks of pest infestation and damage to reputation. This service covers the whole of Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire.

Manchester Pest Control – Mice Facts

Manchester Pest Control Fact file: Mice

If you’ve seen a mouse in your home or office, or think you may have found signs of their presence, you may want to find out some more information about them before you decide what to do next. This fact file comes courtesy of Manchester Pest Control, your local provider of pest control services in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas.

Mice are quite robust for their size (up to 8cm long, not including the tail), and weigh very little (17 grams on average) but are voracious, determined little things. Their fur can range from grey to brown in colour, and is a little lighter on their undersides. As you might expect from the name ‘house mouse’, they prefer to live in the vicinity of people so they can benefit from the warmth and protection of our homes, and live off our food supplies.

Mice in the wild

House mice can survive outdoors, even if they’d prefer to be inside. You might find them:

  • Sheltering in dense grass, beneath bushes or amongst tangled vines;
  • Underneath piles of chopped wood that has been left for a while;
  • Near or within household rubbish that has been put out for collection;
  • Inside old white goods and furniture discarded outdoors;
  • In or underneath sheds, garages or other buildings – wherever there is a convenient entry point.

Mice in the home

With mice setting up temporary homes so close to our properties, it is no surprise that they often find their way indoors. Here they might make a nest:

  • In loft space or basements, where anything you have stored away could be used as potential nest material;
  • Within insulated ceiling space or wall cavities;
  • Inside, under or behind kitchen and other wall units – in any room, even the bathroom;
  • Close to a primary heat source such as your boiler.

Once the mouse has found somewhere it can live in comfort, it has the run of your food stocks, and any scraps which have been dropped or discarded. Mice have very keen senses of smell and unless all food in your home is stored in air-tight containers, their senses are likely to go wild with so much food to choose from! They are certainly not fussy eaters, and their reputation for hunting out cheese is highly exaggerated.

Mice and food

Variously inside and outside the home, mice can comfortably live off:

  • Rubbish and food-waste
  • Things you like to snack on, such as chocolate, or biscuits;
  • Breakfast cereals;
  • Pet or bird food in non-secured containers or left on the ground;
  • Juicy berries and other fruits, either shop-bought or dropped by plants outdoors;
  • Contents of food recycling and regular bins, and items left on compost heaps.

There is enough water content in the food mice eat that they do not need to ingest fluids separately.

Tell-tale signs of mice in your property

You may not have seen a mouse in your home, as they will try and keep out of your way much of the time, and also are more active at the start and end of the day – they prefer these times as they have vision is not very good, although this is made up for by their keen senses of taste and smell. There are plenty of signs that you may however come across, such as:

  • Partially chewed cardboard and plastic food containers;
  • Noise, such as scratching or scurrying;
  • Mouse faeces, little pellets approximately half a centimetre in length, close to food and skirting boards;
  • An unpleasant, slightly overpowering musky scent;
  • Finding a nest.

Problems associated with mice

From the lists above, you’ll already have a pretty good idea that mice are not the best of housemates. But there’s a lot more:

  • A house mouse can live for up to twelve months, and is able to breed from four weeks of age, producing litters of up to a dozen at a time – so there can be a very real risk of infestation;
  • Mice have teeth that grow for their whole lives; these are continually whittled down by their compulsion to chew almost everything they come across: items of furniture, walls, doors, sideboards, valuable possessions;
  • The damage that mice can do may even have an impact on the structural integrity of your property, and they can cause significant damage if they chew through pipes or cables which may lead to water leakage or a fire breaking out;
  • If you are bitten by a mouse, you should get a tetanus jab as there is a risk from this kind of exposure;
  • There are diseases, such as Listeria and Salmonella, that mice are known to carry and which can be transmitted to humans and other animals from contact with their faeces and urine – although they do not suffer from incontinence, mice will leave scent-trails on their regular routes around your house;
  • Mice are carriers of parasites, such as fleas and ticks, which they may also bring into your home, and can then spread to family members and household pets, leading to more than just a mouse problem to deal with;
  • Mice are very agile little climbers, and can swim if they need to, so nowhere is out of bounds for them!

Getting mice out of your home

Now you know what you’re up against: these pests may be small, but allow them to run loose in a home or business property and they can do an awful lot of damage, as well as being potentially harmful in various ways . If you live in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire, why not call Manchester Pest Control for a guaranteed quick response and immediate solution?

Manchester Squirrel Treatment

Pest control for squirrels, and the damage that can happen

Public opinion on squirrels is divided: some people love to see these agile little performers leaping nimbly from tree to tree or using their cunning to defeat the seemingly squirrel-proof bird feeder; to other people, there’s little distinction between squirrels and rats, apart from the bushy tails! And while rats tend to be more active at night which means that they are less often spotted despite their large numbers, squirrels are more active during the daytime which means you may be more aware of their activity in your area.

Squirrels can also be quite tame, taking food offered to them directly by human hand, although as Manchester Pest Control will outline for you in this blog, there can be associated health risks as with any outdoor animal. And you may want to think twice before getting too friendly with these little mischief makers in case they decide to set up home under your roof with disastrous consequences!

Grey vs Red – some facts

The grey squirrel has become a highly visible sight in the UK since it first found its way to our shores only within the last 150 years. Initially thought of as exotic by the Victorians, the grey squirrel has now become so widespread that it has significantly driven down the numbers of native red squirrels. Manchester Pest Control has a bit of a soft spot for the poor red squirrel, which is a smaller, prettier looking, shier sort of creature that now only survives in small pockets in the north of England, with 75% of the population in Scotland where the greys are less prevalent. In addition to competing more successfully for available food stocks (seeds, buds and insects) grey squirrels carry a virus which they are immune to but which can be deadly for the reds.

The red squirrel is protected by law and it is a criminal act to kill, capture, or cause injury to a red squirrel, or disturb and destroy places where they breed or rest. Grey squirrels are not afforded the same degree of protection in this country due to their far greater numbers, although there are strict rules about holding them in captivity without a special licence, unless the captive grey is being transported directly to a vet to be put down humanely. Releasing captured grey squirrels back into the wild is also an offence without an appropriate licence to do so.

Squirrels and Us

The virus that grey squirrels carry is not known to be harmful to humans, although it is recommended that if you come into contact with a squirrel you should wash your hands afterwards. Exposure to squirrel urine and faeces may cause salmonella poisoning if accidentally consumed. Squirrels can also administer a nasty bite, so think twice before feeding even the tamest seeming of them. In fact, Manchester Pest Control strongly advise that you get a tetanus jab if bitten by a squirrel. And like many outdoor animals, squirrels can carry parasites in their fur, such as fleas and ticks, which you don’t want to get bitten by either!

The risk of exposure to these various health hazards is only heightened by close proximity to squirrels that comes when they invade our homes. This is accompanied by even greater risks, as we’ll now see…

Squirrels and Our Homes

All homes in the Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire areas are equally at risk from squirrel infestation – if they find somewhere they like the look of during a cold spell or when searching out a potential nesting site away from predators, these bushy-tailed pests are experts at breaking and entering. We’ve already mentioned being bitten by squirrels, but did you know that the teeth of a squirrel continue to grow throughout their entire life? These sharp front teeth could grow ridiculously out of proportion were it not for the squirrel’s constant compulsion to chew and gnaw, and this includes eating their way into your roof!

If a squirrel finds a weak spot on your roof, they will exploit it to gain access. This is of course assuming that there isn’t already a hole big enough for them to easily get in and out of in the first place, so watch out for loose and fallen roof tiles and any signs of damage following a storm, or just general wear and tear over the years. If a squirrel spots the weakness first, they can be inside your loft space in a shot, and will continue to nibble away at vital roof beams, insulation materials, electricity cables – anything they come across, including items and heirlooms you have stored away for safe keeping.

It has not been unknown for a fire to start after a squirrel has chewed through electrical wiring, so we should add arson to the list of potential crimes these pests can exact on your property. The presence of a nest can only guarantee a whole load of trouble for you and your home once the baby squirrels are born and start to explore their immediate environment.

Manchester Pest Control, coming to your rescue

You may be tempted to deal with a squirrel infestation yourself, but we would urge you to reconsider. As we’ve already noted, there are legal considerations that you must abide by, but there are also a variety of practical considerations. For instance, if you attempt to block off the entry point while an adult grey squirrel is away, it will go to great efforts to get back to its young in the nest and this could result in further damage to your property. The dependent young will also die if separated from their parents, so it is important for you to consider how you would feel about causing this to happen, and then having to dispose of the bodies.

Manchester Pest Control can take the worry away from you and your family. We can run a thorough check for the presence of a nest in your roof space before any attempt is made to seal the point of entry; we can ensure that any captured grey squirrels are taken away and disposed of humanely; and we can provide you with sound advice and assistance on rodent proofing to ensure that you do not experience a repeat of the problem. If you live in Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire, and are concerned about what squirrels may be doing to your home, be sure to contact Manchester Pest Control – we’re here to help.
